Hi,

I am looking at a 2006 that's local to me and it's really nice looking with very good service history, currently at 192,000 miles. It's priced way higher than I would want to pay ($19,000), but I may be able to negotiate, but that's a different discussion.

I pulled up the dealer history and it's very extensive, but I have some concerns. Service History PDF

The good is that the timing belt was just done. Heater Ts were done. Wheel bearings were recently repacked. He did differential services. He went to Lexus for the brakes, detail jobs, everything. Basically it seems like he maintained it really well, but the reality is that it does have almost 200,000 miles on it. Bottom line, $15,000 is the most I would pay for one of these. I really like the 2006, but I don't want to pay $15,000 (assuming he would even take that) and then potentially need to do the AHC and/or Brake Booster pump.

Issue #1 - Could this be the beginning of the brake booster pump failing? I would assume if the pump was failing enough to be audible it would't be a one-time thing.

another 200K mile rig asking nearly $20K ... maybe the world has gone crazy after all. At the same time, there is one (2006) for sale at a toyota dealership with 200K miles for $11,990, today.

I'm sure we'll have a fanboy rushing in here telling you that they're giving this 192k mile car away, since of course he paid $20K for his 200k mile truck recently, and he got a great deal!

Now back to the OP ... why even consider this? Not to mention chances are a seller asking $19K isn't going to sell for $15K, not yet at least. There is a guy named Jimmy, James or Jamie in SoCal that's been buying these high mileage cars up cheap on craigslist (all have 180k+ miles) and trying to flip them for $20K give or take a couple of grand. They've been there for at least a month, and not one has sold. Have you looked on Autotrader and cars.com? I would hold off until a lower mileage car pops up. If you have cash and can move quickly, chances are you'll find better. The ones that are priced well, sell quickly so you'll need to know what you're looking at and be able to make a decision fast.

here's one in socal for 21K and change. 2006 Lexus LX470 - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale

i'd try for that one instead. You won't get it for $15K either but it's worth paying another few grand for 50K less miles.

As for this car, the squeaking could be as simple as belt or it could be something else. AHC issues are another story but do realize that if you do buy this car, it does have almost 200k miles on it. Expect stuff to break here and there.

my $.02.

Nothing! Wrong with 200k miles, If maintenance has been done properly...many here will agree. As for money, well that is a different matter.
My Brake Booster Gave up at 230k. No loss of power-yet Dash lit up lip like A Christmas Tree. Expensive-yet brand new and good for a long time (I Hope). AHC, not sure buddy I have a 05 and it’s got a lift.
Rust free and well maintained with items replaced is a good start to 500k if you ask me. Good luck, Search around , a lot!
