Is there a point to this thread? Are you asking a question? Giving advice?
If you asking for advice then I would clean it, reband it and see if it grease stays away. I did that on mine and the grease has not come back. Used some pipe clamps from napa.

As long as the boots aren't torn I'd just squirt a little grease in there and reband and call it a day. You can pick up new bands from member PFRAN here.

Not bad at all. I'd clean and re-band. Keep eye on, and tighten band more if still oozing.
I like the crimp bands and tool from NAPA. Many here just use all stainless steel screw type band.

Very specialized grease, and how much would you add as it takes exact amount. Looks like very little has oozed out, I'd just reboot.

Hey everybody! Just purchased a 2006 Non-AHC with 135K. Both inner boots are leaking. I just ordered some pfran clamps. Previous owner had them inspected at Dealership and I took it to a local garage that deals specifically with 4runners/Cruisers. Both said they would replace boots and axle. $840. Thoughts? Do I really need to do the whole axle? Just reboot and clamp? Add grease? Thanks!!

You really have no way of knowing the exact amount. While the manual calls for an exact amount there is much wiggle room. In my case, I bought the truck with leaking boots. I had no way of knowing how long they had been leaking and how much had come out. I simply pumped several pumps into each boot and rebanded. Figured new grease was better than just rebanding and running the risk of running dry. Been like that for 11k miles and they are smooth as silk. No gear wine, no lumpy feeling when turning lock to lock. All good from my perspective.

I pumped until I saw the boot starting to swell and grease oozing out around the nozzle. One side took 14 pumps before it started oozing out and swelling a tiny bit. The other side took 22 pumps. May have been too much, but I figured too much grease probably wouldn't be too big of an issue compared to not enough.

What kind of grease is in the boot, what about compatibility? I couldn't find so I rebooted. I didn't want to run the risk of contaminations either from water already in boot or non compatible of adding lube.

Once I did the job it seem to be a waste of time, as old grease was fine. I had just about same amount of ooze as above picture to start. My new boot oozed a bit, and after 20 or 30K mile I re-banded, as again looked like picture above. That is most likely about two spoonful missing.

No oozing last 20K miles.

I'll have to check tonight on the grease but I think it was valvoline. I was more worried about having no grease versus issues with grease compatibility issues. I just had to assume original grease was in there and it was similar to replacement grease I used.

And I agree with BH3D, I recall some gray grease oozing out after several pumps so I stopped at that point.

So it sounds like from reading posts about my above pics that I shoud NOT replace axle? Just clean, add grease and re-clamp with pfran clamps? Type or brand of grease recommendations? Thanks guys!

start with a cleaning, squirt in some grease and reband. drive for a while, check them periodically and you will likely be fine.

Keep in mind the factory gray lube, is not a chassis grease. Nor does factory fill the cavity.

I"m very curious what type and weight of grease have you been using?

image.webp After 260k miles, my '99 has its first torn boot. I just bought the reboot kit, my CV appears to be fine, but will inspect when I pull it.

Six years ago, I pumped bearing grease in leaky boots and rebanded- many miles no issues til now.

I'll post pics of the grease tubes in the Toyota reboot kit shortly- large tube appears to be about 18 oz, smaller tube about 16 oz- quite a bit, but not sure if this is critical.

I remember adding a buttload of bearing grease into the boots for rebanding, but not too much- leave room for flex and articulation.

I have been using Valvoline Synthetic chasis grease. It says it's for Import vehicles with Toyota listed. Also states it's for CV joints. I found an old thread on here that said to use that so that is what I used. Used it on both of my 80's and my 100 with no issues so far.

Is the first picture what you used in the past (Shell Stamina grease), and where did you get?

Thanks

The Shell grease pictured is what I just bought at Toyota dealer. It comes as part of the "reboot kit". I really only need the boots. Maybe you can buy the grease tubes separate.

In the case of just needing to add grease, I'd just pump in some valvoline CV grease, as I did years ago, and it worked fine. I used the McMaster hose clamps to reband and put at least 60k on the rig since.
