Have an opportunity to buy either a 2005 or 2006 Land Cruiser. Both are less than 100,000 miles and are comparable on maintenance, condition, and price, however, the 2006 has 10,000 more miles (and has an inservice date in 2005). Just curious if there is anything significant I should consider when choosing one over the other? Any likes or dislikes from existing owners? Thanks for the help and advice?

06 has VVT-i rated 275 hp vs 235 hp( rating reduced in 07 to 265 hp)

06 has different front end

06 has led tail lights

10k miles is nothing for a cruiser!

Maybe not an issue for you but the '06/'07 MY has, in addition to the VVTi, the additional complexity/cost of repair when it fails of exhaust side air pump system to reduce emissions during the first 15-minutes or so of engine warm up. Kinda strange, at least to me, why only the Toyota truck line got this whereas other VVTi non-truck classed vehicles didn't get an exhaust air pump system...

From what I've been able to gather when this exhaust air pump circuit codes out it leaves you without a cripple home mode...?

Is this a common failure? Cost to repair?

I have the same questions as the OP. There are choices out there on the used market. Price, mileage, and year have offerings to make it hard to choose. Is the VVTi really worth it? On paper oh yeah, I want the extra HP. Its still the same motor, isn't it? I have friends with 2010 FJs with VVTi on a 4.0 V6, and friends pre 2010 without it. They say there is no power difference.

Does the 2006+ have any other features worth getting? Most of the 2006 come equipped with AHC. So that will cost a bit to service (if it hasn't already), or a pain to replace with new coils.

I'm leaning towards a 2006. Saving some dough on on earlier model is tempting too. I want to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

Can't comment on how common or frequently this or part of the system fails...maybe one of the dealers here can comment (beno?). There was a thread here a few months ago IIRC about one that failed.

From what I was told it can be several thou to fix...

Again it might not be a detractor for most...just not something I want for where and how I use my rig.

I just bought an '06 yesterday.
I've driven a total of 2 LC/LX - an '04 & '06.
The power difference was significant (at least on the two I drove) and was the ultimate deciding factor to buy an '06.

I bought a 06+ over a 06- for primarily the extra power. I didn't think the pre-06's could get out of their own way, the 06+ isn't quick, but it moves much better IMO.

Ditto. I looked for an '06 just because of the VVT-i and power boost. Coming from an '05 4runner that had the same engine and loved it. That and I like the LED tail lights on the '06.

I recently picked up an 06. I was looking at 06/07 mainly for the extra HP, but was open to older years as well - which were more in my price range. But was able to find an 06 without AHC, decent price, good maintenance history, and preferred color.

Not sure how widespread the Air Injection System problem is, but I've been fighting it - luckily the auto broker I used is covering the repairs. So far they've swapped out both of the valves and the gas cap, but I'm still getting the CEL... so I have another appointment setup to continue the troubleshooting.

I did start a thread on it https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/671592-cel-p1445-air-injection-pump-system.html

Had I known about the air injection system issues before, I still don't think I would have ruled out 06/07, but might have looked harder for a clean 03-05!

98-2005 with DT headers = 260 HP.

Or 2006-07 with DT headers = > 260hp. We could go on like this for ever.

OP, just pick the one you like best before this thread gets out of hand!

Thanks to all for the advice and thoughts. All good stuff and you've given me a lot to consider. I really appreciate it.

Leaning towards the 2005. Trying to get agreement on price now. Thanks again to everyone.

DT is apparently now shipping the headers for the 06-07 models now - or at least they are making them... Should take you near 300hp if dynos confirm...

AHC rocks (My opinion - very subjective). My vote on the 06+ :D

Toyota quoted me $2k plus to repair the emissions air pump on my 05 Tundra. Not sure if the procedure and parts are similar to the LC. You'll hear a supercharger like whine for the first 30 seconds on cold start up.
