Howdy Folks,

I have a 2004 100 Series and have just received one of Kevin's tailgate lids (Wagon Gear), firstly it is awesome......:D

Now for the problem, on my car the key barrel is held in place by 2 bolts that are attached to a bracket that is spot welded to the inner tailgate skin. Once I do the cuts the bracket will be removed leaving nothing to hold the key barrel in place. It mounts and is held in place from the inside, not the outside with a retaining clip on the inside like some of the pic's I've seen of other installs.

I'm thinking Toyota may have changed the design from earlier models to later models - but don't know, hence the email. :hhmm:

Any help / ideas appreciated, sorry no pics at the moment but will try to get some if it will help.

Thanks from Steve.

I recently installed the tailgate lid on my 2006 and don't recall the key barrel being attached to the rib or anything else. I will snap some photos of mine and update with how I installed it when I get home this evening. And yes, the added storage it is a great addition.

Ok, it looks like there may be a difference for Aust delivered later model 100's.

I have PM'd Kevin and amazingly he has had the same issue / question from another 100 owner from downunder, with a 2004 model. It seems the earlier models have the barrel retained with a clip, but at some point Toyota went to retaining the barrel with a bracket and 2 bolts.

There seems to be three solutions available.

1) Source an earlier model key barrel and retainer clip - no idea if it will fit or wire up the same.

2) Make a bracket up - not really practical

3) Plug the hole with a grommet, urethane it in place, secure the key barrel to the other cable with cable ties, and just use the remote locking fob - this is the option I'm going with.

Just wanted to update where we got to with this.

Cheers, Steve.

Hi Steve,

Just a month ago I encountered the exact same problem. I chose to make an adapter bracket instead of plugging the hole and using the remote key fob. The bracket attaches using the same hex head bolt holes as Keven's tailgate is held in place with (although you do need to get longer bolts.
