You do not remove any protective covers from underneath.
If you look the driver side above the transmission pan, you will see 24mm fill bolt that has WS stamped on the bolt face. Drainplug.webp

My rig is 2004 that's missing the dipstick.
In order to place 24mm socket, I removed the transmission linkage by simply removing a retaining pin and dropping the linkage to gain the space.

I removed about 3 1/2 quarts from the drain plug which is 14mm.

I carefully measured slightly more than 3 1/2 of new WS fluid and used a fluid pump to place new fluids in.Drainbucket.webp

All in all 1 1/2 banana job for trying not to make a big mess.

Tranny shifts smoother than before and I will be doing this job more often.

What makes you want to change the WS fluid?
It's lifetime and really sensitive to humidity..

Dirty fluid. Pil dont last lifetime. Wife's Hoghlander uss WS fluid and it also came with dipstick. This fear of moisture is a myth.

Looks like you have seen this thread already.

Your case will make a good test to see if any adverse effects occur over the next 10ks.

Will see. But I notice vast improvement in shift qualty after 2 drain and fill.

I am thinking of using my magnetic level on the bottom of the pan. Then adjust tires to get level and open the check bolt to see if any oil sqirts at proper temp. Hate to be low with the oil.

Didn't want to start a new thread but wanted to add what I thought was useful information on this topic.
I did a drain/fill on my 2004 and took a picture of the old fluid compared to the new I was putting in.
I'm at 134K and it does feel much smoother with just the 4 or so quarts I replaced.

Those images tell the story. Quite a difference!

When I had mine replaced at about the same mileage I have to agree - much smoother shifting.
