Help needed gang. Do not think this is correlated but I had my valve cover gaskets changed by local shop w plugs. Next day driving down the road with radio on, vais bluetooth playing music, bluetooth phone synced. Before I know it the phone BT music stopped and my BT phone disconnected. Navigation/display unit still on. I stopped and turned car off and then on again, which is easiest way to re-sync phone BT while on road in my experience. When I restarted car the entire display unit/radio buttons/controls did not come back on. I have checked nearly every fuse and none of them are blown. Any help would be appreciated before I buy a re manufactured display unit from cruiserparts.net for $1200. Any tricks. Display is completely black when car is on, radio buttons do not work, a/c and climate buttons do not work. A/c is still on but unable to control. rear a/c buttons working. Thanks, Justin

Did you try replacing the appropriate fuse(s) anyway? Sometimes a fuse can be bad even if it still looks good.

No, but I will go for that this afternoon and let you know.

Cool! Hopefully that solves your problem. I would swap out any of the fuses that could possibly be related.

The 2003-2005 LC has a 30A fuse for the radio system in the engine compartment (behind the battery). Fuse #20 according to this web site (my truck (a 2003) and manual are in the parking lot and I can’t leave my desk at the moment.)

Toyota Land Cruiser (2003 – 2005) – fuse box diagram | Auto Genius

If it ends up not being the fuse, then I’m sure one of the more knowledgeable people on here can help you out. :)

Is it possible the head unit has a fuse on the back as well? I don’t remember if it does.

Thank you. I checked fuses but did not replace any as I assumed if it was not burnt it was good. I'll be sure to check out that fuse. I was bummed that the manual nor auto genius fuse box diagram did not have better descriptions of the fuse functions. My 2009 LC owners manual has very descriptive text about fuse functions.

Check the cigarette lighter fuse, too. Looks like the Nav unit will lose power if that one blows according to this thread:

Fuses keep blowing for NAV/ Radio

You are l likely already aware, there are three fuse boxes: one in the engine compartment, and one on each side of the interior foot wells behind the plastic side panels. The interior ones also have a black plastic cover over them, and are behind the panels.

Is your clock- interior and exterior temp- illuminated display lighted?

I will check this. Great info. I did notice it was not working this morning just while playing with everything.

The interior temp and exterior temp with time that you speak of are not working, what would you infer from this?
I had a similar occurrence a few months ago: the nav screen went black and the surrounding console instrumentation, interior/exterior temp display, cig lighter, accessory outlet, went dark as well- none of the buttons had any functionality. This happened intermittently a couple of times. I have a Grom Vline BT adapter and thought maybe this was somehow causing a system short. I also had previously removed the cig lighter and replaced it with a dual 5v usb charger- thought that might be the problem- drawing too much amps for the wiring. I checked the fuses that are linked to the console accessories and they looked good, but replaced with new anyway. I also removed and re inserted the NAV CD. I have no clue which combination of actions I performed corrected the problem, but its not reappeared since I swapped fuses.

I will pursue this as I am puzzled otherwise.

What do you mean by removing and re-inserting the NAV CD?

There is a DVD player under the passenger seat, which has the navigation DVD in it.

Roll the passenger seat all the way forward and up, then unscrew the two plastic screws to remove the cover. There is a little slider on the top left front of the DVD player. Slide it open to reveal the eject disk button.

I’m still betting on replacing the fuses resolving your issue, though. Might as well try all the options anyway. :)

Great and Thank you. I agree man, I actually just replaced my display unit in my 2009 LC and I sure do not want to pay for another display unit in this one. I actually just had the conversation with my local dealer who replaced the 2009 LC display about the cd/dvd player not working in 2009 LC after they replaced display unit, the dvd/cd player takes disc and spits it back out. They said they will only replace it and cannot work on it. Wearing me out. Fingers crossed at this point.

I’m back guys.

I went through all fuses and found cigarette lighter fuse out, changed all others that would be involved. Started car and everything fired up. Drove down the road and system shut off again. Cigarette lighter fuse changed again but it was still good and all other fuses I changed were still good and even swapped them again. Display will not come on again. I do not use cigarette lighter or any other ports for charging or any accessories. I even attempted to remove and replace disc to navigation but I cannot seem to get disc out with unit off. I even disassembled the center console to unplug the cig lighter in case it had a short. I even removed display unit from dash to check all connections coming into it.

Any help would be appreciated as I am puzzled and do not want to replace my display unit.

Feeling your pain-

By chance have you disconnected the Vais to rule that out?

I'll be in lafayette LA on thursday for 4 days. weird... I could help.

Wow

Jerry you are just the traveling tech.

That’s going above and beyond.
Thanks for all the input.

Update: I discovered through trial and error, let’s say, that my fuse #31 labeled ACC 7.5amp denoted on autogenius as instrument panel lights was blown. I dismissed this in my prior trial and error but came around to realize it was important. I replaced it with vais unplugged. At this point the vais is still unplugged, display unit is firing right along. BT phone working. My test at this point is to leave the vais unplugged for a bit to make sure it doesn’t short out again, then I will plug it back in the determine if it is blowing my acc fuse. If it does I will then look into if wires are kinked along the way because the vais has worked well for the last 2 months since I got it.

Things are looking better. I even fixed my cup holder top as it was not staying closed, now it works well, as I took advantage of the center console being apart.
