Our family needs have changed my Landcruiser buying plans. Now, instead of trying to find a '97 for me, I'm going to buy a new cruiser for my wife.

How much are new cruisers going for in relation to invoice/sticker? That is, are they going for invoice or invoice plus $X (or sticker minus $Y). One dealer mentioned that he'd let me have one for $3,000 over invoice (this sounds a little steep, but I'm not sure).

Also, are there any options that are either "must have" or "must avoid?" I don't know if I'll have a choice (each dealer around here seems to have only one in stock and they're all VERY loaded).

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

They come loaded, unless you special order.
Toy and Lex dealers can sell more Cruisers then they can get, so it's invoice plus $.
I think that invoice (true invoice, not including a lot of dealer prep and add-ons) plus $3k is a good deal.
But
IMO You'd be far, far better off to look hard for a two- or three-year-old, one-owner, well-maintained trade-in for $40 or $45 and use the the $20k you saved for gas money and long vacation trips!

Thats kinda funny, considering my local dealer had a 100 for like 3g's UNDER sticker and they still could not move it. ::)

Invoice is what the dealer pays for the car (supposedly - it's usually a padded number with loads of room for the dealer's finance costs for the loans he uses to pay for his inventory).
Sticker is full retail and, for a new Land Cruiser, is at least $8k to $10K over invoice, depending on accessories and dealer-prep items.

If your dealer really wanted to "move" that Cruiser, lots of other dealers would take it off his hands at invoice plus his costs.

They do come loaded, I can't even find one with 17" wheels (they all have the optional 18's). What size tires (in an all terrain or light mud terrain tread pattern) can I put on one with 18's?

I don't think you want to take that truck off the highway with 18-inch wheels, even if you can find an appropriate terrain tire in that size.
The dealer should be willing to swap for some smaller wheels, or buy it as is and order some 16 inch steel wheels from Cdan for winter and off-road driving.

there have been several posts about real prices and negotiations for new 03s and 04s on the "car discussions" forum on Edmunds.

I would seriously consider getting the Nav Sys with the backup camera! Might save a kid's life... (or dog...)

The tow package is good, it has a ready to hook up connector under the dash (although did not find it yet) for a brake controller.

I did try and find some steel wheels that would fit the late 100s. Nothing off the shelf.

Did do a high-speed run through Baja desert with 18" street tires :D and it/they survived fine...

there is 6-7k of profit between invoice and MSRP on the 2004's.

earlier 100's had almost 10k of markup.

A buddy of mine bought a new '03 (about a year ago) 100, complete w/ DVD & gold package, white, for $53K...the sticker was like $59K. New 100's don't sell well on the dealer lot, so I think you can get a deal. My friend's salesman was telling him the Sequoia was the same vehicle for less $$, but I spent quite a bit of time convincing him it wasn't.

the figure that sticks to my mind is $54K for a new loaded '04, meaning what people could actually get it for (that's plus tax etc I guess)
