2003 Lx470 - what's this pipe for on water inlet bypass? (3 Viewers)

Hey all I'm relatively new here I've searched the thread but I can't seem to find an answer for this.

I just bought a 2003 lx470 recently and I'm looking to restore some things. Does anybody know what this fitting on the water inlet bypass on the front passenger side of the 2uzfe is for it looks to be metal and there's something inside it's sealed but I'm not sure if they're supposed to be something connected here or not?

I've circled the part of the component in question I would appreciate if anybody has any info and what this is or if I should be concerned that it looks like this.

That looks like the coolant temp sensor, also someone hacked this truck up, using RTV on the thermostat housing and water inlet.

Ok so is it normal to be open like that? There is another plug to the right plugged in so is this exposed one normal for ambient temp? If something is missing that goes here. I can't find any good diagram for it online as far as I can tell.

Unfortunately I'm finding a few problems as I explore. Like vacuum lines cut or routed incorrectly. I've got hoses on order and am trying to get this rig to it's proper state. Looks like a shady mechanic or two didn't know what they were doing. I live in Costa Rica and finding good mechanic is really hard here. I trust no one, so I'm doing work myself on this.
I just got this truck recently so not sure what the full story is. I noticed the sealant on thermostat and water inlet bit that I'll fix when I replace timing belt, water pump, radiator hoses. Right now I'm working on having it pass emissions and I'm finding surprises which is why I'm working on it myself especially here.

Coolant temp sensor. Is the gauge on your dash working?

Guage on dash does appear to be working yes. Is it possible the connection to the right is temp sensor which is plugged in? Or is that something else?

I got this truck with 189k miles on it. It's got EVAP and misfire slightly but vac lines are missing or not routed. I'm taking a better look as I wait for new ones and found this

On radar I'm doing timing, water pump, fan pulley and fan clutch, already replaced plugs and new coils but right now making sure no more surprises on Motor or mistakes by another mechanic.

I'm hoping the correct vacuum lines eliminate the EVAP emissions codes. I have vac and check engine lights. But engine runs well. So I was surprised to find these other issues..

Be extremely careful when removing anything that been installed with sealant. You can crack both that thermostat housing as well as the coolant crossover pipe very easily. Use the FSM to repair it exactly as the manual states.

Thanks. I appreciate that. I'm not exactly sure where to get the FSM. I'm looking to restore/repair all these things and others on this truck so I can be confident in it and drive it a long while. Thats why I'm hear to get knowledge and look at guides and video's do this work properly . I'm looking for any advice anyone can give.

Specifically if anyone has words of wisdom for this missing part and when I do timing soon any tips on removing these parts with sealant/RTV I'm all ears.

I have no idea why this sensor (that you posted about) is there and left unconnected, but it's like that in any 2UZ I've worked on (LC/LX/Sequoia/Tundra/4Runner). The 100 series was the first vehicle to use the 2UZ, so it's not something that Toyota started off using and then ditched later on - it just never was used. I don't know if the 1UZ engine in the LS400 used this same part and that sensor was connected?

Interesting. Good to know it's probably normal and since the temp gauge works it must be the one to the right of this one.

Interesting. What year is yours? I see the cable for throttle in your photo which I understand as of 2003(my yr) was changed to electric. Perhaps the 2002 and prior models used it as both connectors in your photo come from a harness but I only have one connection. Maybe Toyota made a change in 2003 and left the part as to nod reconfigure it? It's seems to be a mystery at the moment.
