2002 with Factory Rear Locking Diff??

To OP,

From my 98 manual with diff lock (page 108):

The rear differential lock system is pro- vided for use only when wheel spinning occurs in a ditch or on a slippery or ragged surface.
This differential lock system is effective in case one of the rear wheels is spinning.
First shift the four- wheel drive control into ”L” with the center differential locked to see if you can move forward. If this does not work, use the rear differential lock system also.

To lock the rear differential, push and turn the switch clockwise until it clicks.
Be sure to stop the wheels before locking the differentials.
For easy locking, turn the lock switch and gently depress the accelerator pedal.
The indicator light will blink when the switch is turned on. Wait a few seconds for the system to complete operation. Af- ter the differential is locked, the light will stop blinking and remain on.
The anti–lock brake system does not oper- ate when the rear differential is locked. It is normal operation for the ”ABS” warning light to be on at this time.

The vehicle must be in 4wheeldrive low for the diff lock to work

If US spec truck, then that was added. Above only applies to factory installed lockers. Retrofit or ARB could be wired any way. Take a picture of the rear diff from the front side. Either a actuator on the motor, or airline going to it. Doubt it is ARB since there has to be a compressor somewhere as already mentioned. Remote chance someone retrofitted an earlier model axle with factory locker.

My bet is on salesman trick to sell car after being asked by every Mudder if it has lockers and to look for the switch.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I have been busy as he!! at work lately so haven't had much motivation or energy to dive further into this. And now that the weather is crappy again, it may be a few days before I'm able to climb underneath to snap a pic or two of the diff in question. Rest assured, I will get to the bottom of this one way or another! And to those who speculate that it might be some shady sales tactic by the dealer, the dealer never emphasized or even mentioned a rear locker. I like the conspiracy theories, but that one is more or less debunked

What is this? Mythbusters? Blow something up.

I say a poll is started to guess whether you have a locker or not based on the clues you provide. It will be amazing

Haha be my guest! If you or someone wants to do it, go ahead and I'll stay quiet on my end until we have a good number of guesses. My workload looks lighter this weekend so I should be able to figure it out.

Lol, "workload look lighter" ... U do realize this is a 5 minutes task at best with a flashlight. And that includes one allotted for changing in and out of scrubby clothes.

Yeah you guys are right. It would take no more than a couple minutes at most. I'll get around to it when I get around to it.

You'll probably find you'll get little help from the forum the next time you ask a question unless you pull your finger out and go and have a look, as people have wasted their time for you and you're not prepared to do jack.

Didn't realize some of you saw it that way. When I help someone or make a contribution in an online environment, I usually don't expect anything in return, let alone a 'thanks'. If I've wasted anyone else's time with this thread, you have my sincerest apologies.

Back on topic, engaged 4L yesterday and hit the switch with no results. No rear locker. Thanks to those who were helpful.

I'm still curious about the switch. If you don't know how to post a pic, send me an email of the pic.

I think popping out the RR diff lock button will be pretty easy as well.

Chill guys. I've been busy enough before too that its just not something I have the energy to do, even if its only 2 minutes. It's his question and the responsibility for managing the question/response cycle is his not ours. Even if it takes a year, just let the thread go dormant. Seems like his question piqued our curiosity... and our impatience.

I brought this up a year or two ago but never thoroughly followed up with it.

Would it be possible that a blown fuse could cause a rear diff lock failure?

What about any telltale distinctive feature that would indicate that I have a rear locker (or not)?

I guess I just want to know that there isnt one down there and that the switch is purely "cosmetic". Just seems weird to me

I understand everyone kinda jumped on him here at the end. However, it's frustrating that he asked these specific questions above, and never followed through. People took their time to answer, I think he should have taken the time to look. Otherwise, why ask?. THAT is what this forum is about. People sharing knowledge, helping others and the occasional off the cuff plastidip remark.

I'm actually curious as to what the outcome is.

There are a few folks replying to this thread that need to learn the concept of tact. While you may be interested to find out the result, sending this guy warnings and admonishment for not satisfying your curiosity as soon as you would like is not necessary. All you're doing is creating an opinion of MUD membership as a bunch of jerks. Thankfully lhmommec13 has 240+ posts so he probably already knows what to expect here.

First off, I want the 15 minutes of my life back for reading this entire thread.

Second, why was ARB ever mentioned or thought to be installed when the original poster never mentioned anything about it? Whoever threw ARB into the picture just confused this thread.
