Please Help
I was in my sons 2002 LC when at idle I got a flashing check engine light and followed by a rough idle. I drove it home which was only a 1/2 mile and could tell it had no power and the engine was missing. I popped open the hood and got a slight burning smell.

I pulled the error codes and came up with the following codes:

P0300 Random/Multiple misfire detected
P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire detected
P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire detected
P0306 Cylinder 6 Misfire detected

I did a ton of reading on here yesterday and narrowing it down to either the timing belt jumped or some kind of electrical problem. The misfires were on both banks and all at once so I am doubting it is the coil packs. Spark plugs have 10K on them and I changed out the fuel pump and filter out 2k miles ago.

It still runs but I am afraid to run it because I have read it is an interference motor and I would rather not damage any of the valves. I am not sure at this point how to easily verify the values are not damaged or the timing belt. I am sure it could use a timing belt/water pump kit and have read how to do it but I have limited indoor space to work on it and understand it could take a couple of days.

Does anyone have any thoughts what I should check or could it be something else?

I am probably going to tackle this myself and I am sure it is not within my budget but does anybody know the going rate to change the timing belt/water pump kit in the Dallas area? From what I have parts are $200 to $350

It has 203K miles on it and it has run great for the last 2 years that we have had it. Got it from the in-laws which have had it from when it was almost new and we were told they had done most if not all the recommend maintenance through the dealership and later through firestone both are out of state. Although I got the last minor maintenance records, they could remember what all had been done. My son has put very few miles on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome,

When was belt last done? Was pump & pulleys done at that time? Any leaks at weep hole of lower T-belt cover?

Your non VVTi is believe not to be and interference engine. I've seen many post in mud of breaks at speed while accelerating without damage.

Pull top covers off T-belt and have a look.

T-Belt can be DIY in a day if you're ready, would be fun for you and your son.

Hmmmm.....misfires and a burning smell. Certainly could be a belt. I agree with 2001LC to take the front of the engine apart enough to see the T-belt condition. When you remove the serpentine belt, you'll also have a chance to check that as well as the parts run by it. However, I disagree with 2001LC that a T-belt job can be done in a day if it's your first time through it and you have limited shop space. I think you'll need a nice set of tools, enough space to corral all the parts removed, and at least a weekend to figure out R&R for the belt. If you do tackle it, use the great threads in the FAQs. They will save you so much time and cussing that you'll want to throw money at those who took the time to post.

Sounds like coil packs to me. Please see my thread below where new coil packs solved the problem. The Check Engine light flashes when the engine speed is causing heat damage to the catalytic converters. (I got that info from the factory service manual which is available for download on this site.) That could account for the burning smell, or it could be just a little spilled oil burning off. The coil packs are inexpensive and very easy to swap out. You could start trouble shooting for free by swapping them between a bad cylinder and a good one. It might not behave as you would expect, but that might at least tell you if the coil packs are the problem.

P0300, P0301, P0303, P0304 and VSC TRAC VSC OFF lights! All at once.

I looked at that thread very interesting.
