I have a 2001 LC with 257k on it. Sometimes it simply will not kick over. Starter, alternator, battery, etc. all working well. Dealer claimed they "tore the wiring harness apart and found nothing" and claimed I needed an ECU. When I pushed back on the price, they magically discovered that the keys had to be reprogrammed and the issue went away. This was a few months ago but the issue resurfaced this afternoon. Thankfully, the truck started after some cussing, walking away and trying again.

So, my question is: does anyone have any idea what is going on? If it is a key issue, can I simply remove whatever is immobilizing the engine? Do I need to replace something?

Thank you in advance!

If it’s a 2001 then you should post this in the 100 series forums as they can help better. I had a 100 series and that forum has many threads on the issue you mention. Good luck!

Look for the Lack of a check engine light when this is happening . If it is off pull the efi fuse and look for burning , wiggling it usually will make it start short term . There is a lot of info on how to fix or bypass this

I have a 99 and there is a "soft policy" on replacing the ECU when there are issues with master key being lost, etc... you'll have to fight for it, but I had to do it on my 99 when it did not have a master key. the policy allows for 1 ECU swap and you have to buy a couple of keys.

If you think it's key related, I would dig harder on the ECU/Immobilizer.

There is also an issue in the fuse box with the Immobilier Relay which is well documented here on Mud. Could be that - I had to take my relay out and clean contacts... others have had to bypass the fuse box wiring.
