I just jumped from an 80 to a 2001 100 series. I bought really cheap for $10k with only 52,940 miles on it. I went to the dealership to see the records because of the low mileage thing. But it is true. Previous owner maintained it pretty well. I only have to replace 2 coil packs (#5 and #7) and two rear-upper control bar bushings. The mechanics at the Toyota dealer told me that they recommend me to replace the T-belt with the water pump and all other seals and stuff right there. Its 40k miles under the recommended by Toyota but they said its not because of the mileage to change the t-belt but because the age of the truck. It seems that the previous owner didn't use it a lot and when a car is sitting too much without using it, the belts gets the shape of pulleys and bearings (or deforms) while is not in use. I live in Puerto Rico; its a 100x35 mile island. They also said those V8 are not-conflicting engines, just the VVTi are the conflicting ones. What you guys recommend me to do? Should I get the timing belt/water pump job or wait until the recommended schedule by the book?

If its my 100 Im doing all the maintenance that's due. If its a customers truck Im doing the same thing. Ive seen an LX470 (Lexus 100 series) with over 200k on it and the old lady that owned it bragged about the lack of maintenance she has done to it. I wouldn't be so ignorant. Maintenance is cheap. Repairs are not.

I'd wait until 90k to do the 90k regardless of years and I tend to over-maintain. Pull the DS cover and take a peak if your worried.

Think he means interference. Or in other words, if the tb goes then you got some problems.

Exactly. That's what they -at the dealer- told me. On regular V8 if the t-belt breaks the only situation you'll get is to call a tow truck. Although on VVTi V8's engine you'll get mayor problems there.

my vote: wait for the 90k. Many people go 200k on the original out of ignorance. Virtually no belt failures are reported here on the board. Congrats on a great price. Jealous!!!!

Can someone verify this? It's counter to what I understand of the 2UZ.

That's what I have been reading since yesterday. Is the reason why I posted this since my reason is primarily for what they told me replacing the belt because of age and time of not using the truck. They did a pressure teat to see if the water pump could leak but its still strong.

Congratulations! What a steal for $10k, wow!

I think I got things messed up. What I meant to say is that on early V8 engines if the T belt breaks nothing else will happen but a non starting engine and a tow truck, but a VVTi engine if the T-belt breaks you'll get mayor problems there.

That's the one I bought.

Again, not true. A broken belt on either would result in valves contacting pistons. True for all 2UZ variants.

And, by the way, I probably wouldn't be going back to that dealer for anything.

My vote is to get all of that service done now. You got the rig for a steal, so, putting another 2-3k into her isn't a problem. You'll still be ahead. Great job on the find, enjoy her.

Yes, that's what I was thinking today. I was skeptic about the mileage if they were fake but the dealer found the other dealership that had the records and everything is correct. Low mileage and quite good maintenance there. The only major thing done there was a rack and pinion they replaced for an original one.

I just ordered a bunch of stuff from ARB and went to Costco to order the BFG Mud KM2. If you see my avatar photo, I'll put it just like my 80 I'll sell to a friend of mine's brother.
