I am looking at a 2001 Jeep Cherokee SE 4x4 with a pair of Dana 44 axles from a Rubicon and a stock 4.0L engine and transmission. The engine is really tired so, it needs to be either rebuilt or replaced. I am wondering what are the better repower options? Should I look for one of the newer Pentastar V6's from a crashed Jeep or, would something like 5.0L Ford or 5.7L Chevy V-8 be a viable candidate?
It is on a Rough Country lift and I would prefer not to need new drive shafts considering the ones in it now are premium Chrome-Moly custom units. I also would like to avoid some custom wiring harness work.
Thanks!
