In my search for a 100 series, I ran across a 2000 LX 470 for sale. It's at a distance that does not allow me to personally see it quickly. The carfax is clean but the salesman noted some issues with the front end. They've offered to correct it but not sure whether there could be underlying problems. Here are a few pics. Could this be a weak point on the FE prone to failure or any thoughts of whether it is collision related? It's at a reputable dealership and they offered up the info.

Is it a crack or a scratch? Looks like the tab on the end broke that holds that little lip on. Don't think it would be rust. Most likely a bad repair job using the wrong hardware.

It's definitely a crack between the headlights. And i believe they said something about a wind deflector missing where it is sagging.

It's at a Lexus dealership so I feel pretty certain they would fix it properly. Just concerned about underlying issues.

What is on the front of the truck? Could be a diy gone bad.

Ha....brush guard on the front. That's highly possible. It looks to me like some type of impact, but I don't see any major damage. That's my concern. The salesman has been very upfront about everything. It has very low mileage for the year and interior looks immaculate.

More Info

Spoke with dealer again. The loose piece in the origina picture is the moulding that goes around the headlight. My guess the crack formed when air/wind got around the loose piece and the crack formed at the flex point.

They indicated it has been painted and blended from the driver front door, to the front quarter panel, over the hood, to the passenger front quarter panel and passenger front door. They also indicated it appeared there was bondo residue under the front drivers wheel well.

The front quarter panels are stamped with the VIN, but no VIN on the hood. Perhaps the hood has been replaced. The hood is Toyotal OE.

CarFax and Autocheck indicates no accidents.

The dealer is going to replace the front end piece that is cracked and probably remove the cheap brush guard.

Mechanically they believe no issues. In fact, they indicated their service techs are meticulous and if any mechanical issues were found it would have gone to auction. It also has low miles.

So, I'm perplexed. I had been looking for a newer 100 series, but ran across this one which is in the mileage range I want and much cheaper (although it is not a steal for the age). Don't have any plans to resell anytime soon, but eventually do a mild build and drive it.

What do yall think about it?

Pulled the trigger....OK, tell me if I am crazy

OK, please tell me if I am crazy before I give them any money.

Went ahead and told them I would take the 2000 LX470. They are replacing the broken FE piece I mentioned previously and suppose to install new mats (I know, the mats are minor).

It has just over 46K miles. They say they did the 30,000 mile service, which costs $1800. Anyone know what you get for $1800?

They are also going to replace the timing belt and water pump, at my request. This increased the cost some, but they discounted it.

Price....$22,500 + TTL

22k for a 2000 seems high, even with only 46k miles and especially if it's been in an accident. Bondo and paint blending sure sounds like an accident to me, even if Carfax didn't note this. just my .02
Let us know what happens

Good decision. That kind of money should get you into a much newer truck with no body work.

Yup. I'm sure shes a great rig. And she will make someone happy. But $22,000 seems like an awful lot of money for what you are buying. Picked up my 2004 about 18 months ago for $18,000 with 86,xxx miles on the clock. Was a steal. Got me stoked. Never looked back. And when you get a good deal on the initial purchase, you can buy toys for her without feeling bad. "I got a hell of a deal! I can pay $2300 for front and rear lockers and STILL got a good deal." is a good feeling. Offer em $14,000 and see what they say. Or listen to the little voice telling you to RUN! someone seems to be trying to rob you at the stealership...

They're going off KBB. My 2000 with 78k is still worth close to $20k, it has weirdly appreciated in value which is crazy. I paid $19k for mine a year and a half a go, 2000 with 60k Miles...Good deal, I'd like to think so

"worth" is a relative term.

I paid $23k for a 2005 with 109k miles, but it was a Vegas LX with no rust and perfect records. It has some highway road rash that's been touched up. What you have to remember with these rig's is at 100k miles they are good for another several 100k miles with no major problems and only regular maintance. Look for the newest one you can afford that has averaged around 1000 miles a month since new and has good maintance records and no rust. It is as hard on a vehicle to not be driven and not serviced then it is to be driven too much and not serviced by the book. Plus a rust belt 100 has a whole other set of problems that you don't want to have to deal with. I use to live in KC Missouri, I would detail the bottom of my previous 100's every spring with petroleum jelly and then paint with rustoliuem, it would take me several hours but I would eliminate all the surface rust. I would then do another cleanup going into the winter months. During the winter I would clean the bottom of my 100 every week. That is what you have to do if you live in an area where it snows and they use the new salt on roids to keep the roads safe. Hope this advise helps, I've owned 4 100's they are, I think the best built most dependable vehicles made.
