I have a 2000 LC with 70,000 miles. I have recently noticed a high pitched whine that starts at precisely 80 MPH and completely goes away at 84 MPH. Obviously, I could elect to not drive at this speed, but 80-84 MPH is my comfort zone. Any thoughts on what the noise might be? Could it be serious?

Thanks

It is a very high pitched warning given to all of the animals on the earth that a mad man driving a 5000lb mass of steel is coming their way.

No really, I have never heard anything like that and I have travelled, for distance, at 85+. Is this a new vehicle for you?

Try toyota tsib # nv013-00.
replacement of the high speed gear , to reduce noise ( whine )

Pretty funny and true. It is in fact a new (used) LC for me. All in all a very good vehicle. I have owned numerous Toyota 4x4's in the past, but this is my first LC. I am very pleased.

Thanks for the info. Should I worry about the noise? Will it get worse and migrate to other speeds? How involved is the replacement of the high speed gear?

Thanks again
