I've read most of the threads on this topic but still need help. I have (1) working master and (1) working valet. I want to order (2) new masters.

Do I have to order a toyota part # for the "guts" to the key?

There are a plethora of key shells online but the ones that come with the "guts" are about $150 and I'm still not convinced they will work.

Please help. Thanks/ Clay

Trunk Monkey is correct. As a side note you will need to go to a locksmith to have those keys cut. The big box stores will not be able to do it. I had a local locksmith cut mine and it cost me 2.00 each.

Whats the part number for the guts on a 2000 model?

Whats the part number for the guts on a 2006 model?

The reason i ask is that one post says that a 2002 and previous models use a "4C" key while the 2003 and newer LCs use a "4D" key.

Thanks guys - this is an issue because both LCs are down to one master key and I don't want to have to mess with a new ECM.

They don't sell just the innards, you have to buy the whole key. New they're pretty pricey. I got one off Ebay for $80.

Just get a key without all the buttons and program it as a master, cheap and easy. For the 2000 you can do the song and dance to program the key yourself, for the 2006 you'll have to have the dealer program it with their laptop.

Just ordered one off ebay that says "refurbished" but guaranteed to work or they will refund payment. Then I got a little balsy and ordered a folding key shell for ten bones to try out.

Bought a key blank for my 2001 off fleabay for about $10 shipped. Took the key to Home Depot where they cut it for free. Followed a few easy steps to program it and I had a new spare key. All for $10.

I followed these instructions and it works prefectly:

Code:
Instructions for programming a transponder key.

Prerequisites:
blank transponder key (eBay.com - $20).
pre-programmed master "black" key for the vehicle.

Programming spare keys: for 1998 to 2002

1.. Copy the cuts of the original working key onto the appropriate
transponder blank.

2.. Enter the car and close all of the doors.

3.. Simultaneously depress and release both the brake and accelerator pedals.

4.. Within five seconds, insert a working pre-programmed key into the ignition cylinder, and turn to the "on" position.

5.. Within fifteen seconds of turning the ignition, depress and release
the accelerator pedal five times for a primary key. (Depress and release four times for a valet key.)

6.. Within twenty seconds, depress and release the brake pedal six times for a primary key. (Depress and release only times for a valet key.)

7.. Turn the ignition to the "off" position and immediately remove the
key.

8.. Within ten seconds of removing the key, insert the new key and turn it to the "on" position.

9.. Within ten seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal once. The security light will then flash for 60 seconds and then turn off. When the security light stops flashing the programming should be complete.

10.. Start the vehicle to verify that programming was successful.

FOR 2002+
1.Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
2.Insert master key into the ignition cylinder.
3.Cycle the ignition cylinder from ON to OFF 5 times.
4.Open and close the driver side door 6 times.
5.Remove the master key and insert the new duplicate key.
6.DO NOT TURN THE IGNITION CYLINDER ON
7.The new key will be registered after 60 seconds. The THEFT light on the
dashboard will go out, indicating that programming has been completed.
"some 2002 will work using the 1998+ programming."
