So I hit a deer last weekend and it took out most of the front end. I stopped and saw I was dropping coolant but figured I could drive up the road a couples miles where there was a gas station. What I didn't realize was that the deer also took out the tranny cooler too. When I got to the gas station, she didn't want to shift into reverse as I had lost pretty much all of the transmission fluid. The repair shop is still working up the estimate but hasn't looked at the tranny yet. My question to the forum gurus is how bad is this going to be? The body and other damage is already at about $17K. She's not totaled yet but its getting uncomfortably close.

Ooof, that was a good hit at $17k.

If it was really only a couple miles, nothing to worry about. The tranny needs pretty much full fluid to properly engage the torque converter. So you're just see the results of the fluid being pumped out the cooler. With a new radiator and fluid fill, tranny should be good to go.

Thanks. the crazy part is that the damage is all between the fenders and under the hood. No real "body" damage except bumper, grill and headlight. I can't believe the $$$ are this high.

That does seem overly high. The front end is generally easy to repair as everything bolts in. Only way I can see such a big number is if the frame itself has been damaged?

My completely clean record, multiple discounts, and garaged in West Texas cruiser is $1800/year in insurance. My wife’s Volvo is only $1000. The insurance companies know how pricey these are to fix too apparently.

Here’s mine. As long as it’s not totaled I guess it doesn’t matter.

They are definitely tanks. Keep us posted on the repair outcome. Also tell them you don’t want any of those airbags that have metal shrapnel in them ;)

Update: its taken a month but the body work and new bumper is on. Today, they had the transmission looked at and they tell me its toast and I need a new one. A re-man from Toyota dealer is $4500. This brings the total repair to about $25K which is very close to "totaled". I may have an insurance issue.

Any advice on what to be concerned with having a re-maned transmission installed?

Figure out if it is a Toyota RE-MAN or someone else. If you are going to get a RE-MAN you want it to have been performed by AISIN. Judging from the picture you have a 13-15 so you have the 6 speed that is a relatively common transmission. As long as you get an AISIN RE-MAN I think you are OK. Just my 2 cents. On the other extreme - what you absolutely don't wany is a REMAN that was done locally be a transmission shop, but coming from the dealer it should not be.
