So I misdiagnosed my 2010 lx570 as having a bad neutral safety switch due to no display of what gear you are in as well as the disabling of many things due to this condition. Turned out my back up light bulbs (no name led but several years old) short circuited and burned up causing fuse to blow. I got it sorted out and went back to stock bulbs. So here are some of the steps to removing the neutral safety switch from the passenger side of the trans . The internal bore of the switch is aluminum and the shift rod it engages with is steel. Needless to say those 2 metals don't play well together. The 12 mm nut that secures the transmission control linkage lever was quite stuck. Had to use a bunch of Kroil penetrating oil and a lot of back and forth of the wrench. After getting that off you straighten the locking fingers of the center nut and remove the nut. At this point you basically have to destroy the switch and what you are left with is a round threaded slug of aluminum still stuck to the shift rod. We used a drill bit on the end of a flexible Dremel attachment to drill a line along the length of the aluminum. Then we chiseled off the aluminum bits followed by a wire brushing of the shift rod. Applied antiseize to the shift rod and installed the new switch. There is a bolt in the upper right corner of the switch that is in an oblong hole to allow adjustment. Mine was slightly off when finished resulting in the N And D display requiring you to hold pressure on the shift lever in the car to keep those displayed. A quick loosening of the adjustment bolt on the switch allowed movement of the switch to get the display adjusted. There is a reference line on the switch that you are to align with a groove bit it's hard to get the right angle on it because of the cat convertor blocking the way. Would have been easier working on this if the convertor/pipe is removed first. I work at a Toyota dealer and we see this stuck switch situation on most 4 runners and sequoia and tundra. Hope this helps someone if they need to tackle replacement of this switch.

Is this primarily an issue in areas with salt?
