lol

what's weak about them?

Comp guys are running 40 spline 9" axles all the time and having good results with little breakage. It all depends on price.

They are far from weak.

Donno that I would run 49" tires on one. But hell, even the 2.5 ton junk is not holding up to tires that big (shafts, ring and pinions etc..).

Rockwells are cool because they are fairly good when it comes to strength and cost.

kinda like a 14 bolt. $100 gets you to 44" tires easily.

Mace is definetly correct on this Rocks are nice because they are a dime a dozen in stock form and you can throw a 42 or a 44 at them and driven with a little sense they dont break.

lots of guys here running rockwells with much larger tires and no issues.we run timken axles in our mud trucks with 6.17s and 50"military tires.350 chevy bus engine and 400r4 with no problems .my 40 has timken axles 501 caddy 400 auto and 11.24 tractor tires and it spins them fine.check out yankey lake dot com and see some of these trucks work good luck

have you got pics of this 40?

Damn, I paid more than that for mine.. crap! ;p

and you can throw a 42 or a 44 at them and driven with very little sense they dont break.

fixed that for ya.. :)

Anyway, back on topic.. 6BT - perfect. governor spring kit will let it tach up past 3,000 rpm, and just that and a torque plate will get him over 300RWHP and 700+lb-ft. with a stock turbo. That'll be plenty to spin the goop out, he'll just need to use 2nd or 3rd gear to get the wheelspeed.

I would agree that the axles themselves probably sap more power since power has to go through 2 sets of gears, not to mention, all the rotating mass is far heavier than "conventional" axles.

Do not forget strat cut gears are a little more efficient than helicul cut. Do not get me wrong the worm gear more than eats it up, but it is sum thing to keep in mind.

its in the garage on its baby tires but if you want pictures of the truck and axles i can do that.i use timkens because they are strong as rocks have double roller pinons and are made for long life.also they are narrow and with 46 military tire and flares the tires dont stick out .we are mud guys so i dont know about rock crawing .my club is building a course this summer so i will find out .its gonna be 32 today so will try some picks good luck

i'd like to see some pics, i've never heard of those axles, i'd like to see how you squeezed a caddy engine in there too....get some pics next time your out mud whompin'

dont know for sure what those are but they are not like any timken axle i have seen or used .at the start of ww2 all 6x6 trucks used timken axles .timken could not keep up so other axles were made .napco, marmon ,ford ,all halftracks and armoured cars used timken axles .trying to get photos but snow is so deep it raises the front of the truck and hits the garage roof .there is nothing wrong with rockwells they are strong and plentiful most places. i had a pile of timken axles from a military junk yard so i used them .the 2.5 ton rating on the deuce is off road capacity on road they are rated at 5 ton and handle that easy .good luck
