1KZTE swap into fj80

You don't say where you are in the world or what current transmission you have. The only problem that it can see is that the A442 is controlled by a computer. Orto from wholesale automatics has a solution to this problem in a kit.
The early A442f found behind the 1HD-T is fully hydraulic. No computers involved.

I had a 1KZTE 94 4 runner and it was an awesome truck. By weight in door plate the 4 runner was only a 100 or so lbs less than my 62. I was amazed how heavy the surf/4 runner platform was. I would run a manual trans behind it. But it had tons of torque. I would run one again. I put 70k miles on it in a 14 months running sales calls. I just didn't like the down pipe going right under the transmission.

6.2/6.5 has been done a lot but it is a junk engine. They suffer from cracks in the crank cradle.

Early A442 is hydraulic/mechanical- that is what I'm running.

Cheapest way to do a 1hdt conversion is to buy a whole rig up here for 8-10k (have seen as cheap as 5k). You'll have everything you need and lots of extras to make a bit of your dough back.

Would this swap work at all? The new RAM (VM Motori) diesel engine.
I know on paper the transmission looks good, but this tranny uses no manual levers. It uses electronic controls, a rotating knob to select between P R N D. So right there I think there is a headache.
As far as the throttle control goes, I have no idea. More and more cars use drive by wire set ups. Possibly another headache area.
Of course engine mounts, transfer case adaptation... more headaches.

The price and power/torque numbers look really good. $5,500 for the engine and tranny. I like it.
It includes a lot of accessories (ECU, accelerator pedal, starter, etc).

I know old thread but....

Hypothetically, if I had a complete but rolled donor truck why is this a bad idea. The weight difference is not that much between the Prado and an 80 series.

The 1kzte can be turned up a little.
Has anyone actually done this?

Tell me why it will not work?

Thanks John.

Turbo IDI engine struggles to keep cool and is a slug in a Surf/Hilux/whatever it's in. Add a lot more weight and it's not going to like you

That engine was in the 4Runner/Prado and not the LC’s for a reason. It’s a light duty engine, and won’t last turned up and schlupping about an 80.

I’m sure others will tell you to try it, if you don’t want to follow their suggestion. But I wouldn’t. I can almost guarantee you’ll regret it.
