Hi all, I have a 1993 Hilux Surf with the 1KZ-TE motor in it.

Recently I discovered a fuel leak out of the top of the fuel pump on my 1kz. I read online someone had a similar issue and fixed it but adding an O-ring under the nut to seal it off. I made sure everything was super clean then I removed the nut (the one with the white plug) and added the O-ring. It sealed perfectly fine with no leaks. Went to take it for a drive and 2 mins later the car was down on power and making a really loud rattle sound.

Only does it on idle and when driving with no throttle input there is no noise. Tried bleeding injectors with no luck. I took it to my family mechanic and was not 100% sure but believed it was faulty injectors. Just weird as it started to make this sound after I 'fixed' the fuel leak.

Checked ECU codes and it gave me the codes:
14= Timing control signal and
39 = Fuel temp sensor.

I tried to check the resistance of the Timing Control Valve but it will not give me a reading which I believe to be the problem but want to make 100% sure of first. The sound seems to go away after I have had the battery disconnected for around 20 mins only to come back after a few mins of running the motor. I have rang quite a few places and they told me it sounds out of time, I checked the timing belt and all marks lined up perfectly, fuel filter was only changed 1,000km ago so I'm just so confused.

Any ideas? Attached are videos of the motor when it's running poorly and again when it seems to run fine. Also a pic of the sensor I was talking about.

knocking:

running fine:

Thanks heaps.

I’d pull out the pump and injector for test at diesel pump repair shop. See what’s going on with the fuel system .
