1KZ change oil filter with every oil change, or every other as the manual says?

What's everyone doing, and what is your reasoning behind doing so?

Driving my gassers with $3 oil filters and a reasonably long oil change interval, no big deal to change the filter with the oil. With the 1KZ and it's very short oil change interval and expensive oil filters, if I can get away with changing the filter every other oil change, I'd like to do so.

I'll probably get roasted over this but, I do the filter with every oil change, and i manage the cost by using Donaldson filters. They're well priced here in NZ - they're miles cheaper than Genuine and cheaper than Ryco (probably the most popular brand here), but seem better than the really cheap filters like Sakura.

I've used this approach on my diesel toyotas (1KZs, 1HZ and 1HDT) for years and it seems to work, though i have no firm evidence. I aim to change oils every 5,000 KM but it usually ends up being more like every 7,500 because life.

Order genuine filters in bulk from partsouq or similar and change every 5000 km.

I've noticed oil pressure building noticeably more quickly with genuine filters.

Also, I would put money on the fact that the only Toyotas in NZ with genuine filters are those that are still under warranty and getting serviced by the dealership. Everyone else, including independent mechanics are using Ryco, Donaldson or Sakura. Given how many thousands of trucks there are here and how little you hear of engines going pop because of oil issues I reckon it’s fine.

I'm sure it is fine, but a ryko costs me $25 or $30 and I can get a genuine for $10 USD + $40 or $50USD postage for 5 filters, not worth using aftermarket.

Take an oil sample at your next oil change and send it to an oil analysis lab. I would bet you could easily run 10,000km intervals with a good synthetic oil and genuine filters. Different engine, but the recommended interval on my TDI powered Prado is 13,000km based on oil analysis, I usually do 10k. On a stock TDI I run 10,000 mile intervals.

Oil analysis will likely happen.

Pretty sure the main contaminant on these old IDI diesels is soot loading of the oil, and unless I want to install serious bypass filtration(not out of the question by any means) changing the oil frequently is how that's handled.

I wouldn't over-think it. If your 1KZ reaches the end of useful life due to wear before failing due to the cylinder head cracking, then it has done well. The weak cooling system is the thing to keep a very close eye on.

Yep, cooling system maintenance is top priority. Lots of proactive part replacement planned.

I live in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, very mild climate here. It'll never see the temps that Australia or the Middle East see regularly.

I reckon engine oil is actually quite cheap when on sale like $50 aud for 10l in the grand scheme of vehicle maintenance. I change oil with every filter without a doubt. Nothing like clean oil.

Terrain tamer filters seem to be ok and good price. Oem too exy for me, wix ok, sakura bit howyagoin. I found the donaldson o'rings fail if you stock up too many of them, unfortunately, was happy with them until then. I dare say a few of the aftermarket filters are made in the same factory, re badged.

Read an article of a company which would do 3x oil changes and filters back to back, if they want to clean an engine. Another way of looking at.

Alrighty, here's a UOA for 5k km on oil and 10k km on the filter. Filter is a Mahle OC275, and obviously all is fine. Will continue changing the oil filter every other oil change.
