Looking for help figuring out whether a FJ60 with a turbo diesel conversion has a 1HZ with a turbo conversion or a 1HD-T. Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks.

One is more expensive and the other just accepts a turbo just Ok and you do run the risk of blowing up a 1hz. Parts are available for both so that is good.

Thanks -- Just trying to figure out whether that engine is a 1hz with a turbo upgrade or an actual 1hd-t. Any idea?

that looks a lot like my 1hdt. the 1hz has a different air crossover pipe. that’s the 1hdt one

Not as simple as that but below is a thread to help.

yes sorry. i didn’t mean to claim that was a 1hdt for sure but it has a few 1hdt items. many parts are interchangeable though and that pipe may easily have been one.

as per that thread the injection lines on this engine look to go to the top of the injector and the return line is different than my 1hdt. so that leans more towards the 1hz side of things. i think the best way to tell will be getting the block casting.

That's a 1HZ - injector lines in the top and injector bleed below.
A 1HDT has bleed at the top and injector lines into the side of the injector.

The block casting isn't necessary the best way to tell as a 1HD-T rotating assembly and head will fit on a 1HZ block and vice versa.

If it's got the 1HZ injectors it'll have 1HZ innards, wouldn't run with 1HZ head/injectors and 1HDT pistons. (And vice versa)

Great -- Thanks very much. Super helpful. The seller says that the previous owner had the work done by Diesel Toys in San Antonio -- but doesn't have any records on that. I'm a little torn over whether to pull the trigger on a 1HZ turbo upgrade with no knowledge of exactly what was done. Rest of this FJ60 is great, but just not sure I want to have to be thinking about the motor all that much.

If you’re willing to flip a coin and have $5k incase you blow it up I’d say go for it. I used to be pro 1hz turbos since I had such a good experience with a 2h with an aftermarket turbo but the more I read the more I’m anti. Let the slow vehicle be a slow vehicle is my stance.

If you are going to drive a 1HZ + Turbo on US highways, you need a 3"+ exhaust and a charge cooler of some kind, especially if you are not a super on top of looking at your gauges. Excessive backpressure and heatsoak/overheating is what you need to watch for. Aside from that, they are awesome; super easy to get parts for and easy to work on, just don't expect to have LS power.
