G'day all,
Some of you may have seen my thread in the 80 Series section regarding the acquisition of a 1990 HDJ80 GXL. Now, I have done a little more research into this vehicle and my suspicions regarding its true identity have been aroused. Before I actually get it, I would like some help to work out if it actually has a 1HD-T fitted. The vehicle appears to be a HDJ80 because: the firewall plate says so (1HD-T and H151) and it has the 'turbo' on the grille, but it does not have it on the rear side of the vehicle. It has the turbo lights on the instrument panel. So, I think the vehicle is a HDJ80 with the sticker missing or something.

BUT...

This is where it gets weird -the vehicle is listed as a HZJ80 in the ad, and the carfacts history report that I bought lists the Vin given in the ad as having an engine number beginning with 1HZ. They tell me some story about it being a glitch in their system.

A look under the bonnet reveals the factory crossover pipe, the data plate as discussed and what appears to be a turbo airbox lid. There is, however, a weld in the airbox lid where the pipe transitions to round, which may, or may not be factory. The engine sounds like a 1HD-T as opposed to a 1HZ, but that doesn't mean much because I've only heard 1 1HD-T close-up before. There is a small line that goes over somewhere near the airbox (can't remember exactly where) and that is sealed with silicone, but that may be just a past repair, because it looks quite thorough.

The price is on the low side for a HDJ80, and too high for a HZJ80, so I would like to be sure that I'm actually getting a 1HD-T.

Could someone please give me some advice on how to tell if the engine actually is a 1HD-T, or if a 1HZ has been dropped in, or the vehicle has had HD-T data plates slapped on it.

Cheers, and a Merry Christmas to all.

difference between 1hdt and 1hz other than turbo, intake and exhaust manifold:
1hz is indirect injection, so it has pre combustion chamber in the head, while 1hdt is indirect injection,
the piston of 1hdt and conrod is stronger than 1hz,
the fuel pump of 1hdt has boost compensator and it has 12mm plunger, while pre99 1hz has 10mm plunger and post99 1hz has 11mm plunger.

On the IP Side of the block near the rear of it there should be some white lettering with some numbers. If it's a HDJ it will be 1HD-XXXXXXXXX

The 1hz injector lines feed in the top of the injectors and bleed off ports are on a collar down around the base near the head.

1hd-t injectors put the fuel feed in the side and bleed off at the top.

Ok, so the easiest way to tell is by studying the injectors and the line placement.
I learnt 3 things in about the past 90 seconds - a 1HD-T has a 12mm pump, the engine number is on the injector pump side and the difference between injector lines between a 1HZ and a 1HD...thanks everyone for your help.

The engine type is molded into the block in large letters. It is also possible to build a 1HD T using a 1HZ block and 1HD T parts.

This is the easiest way to tell quickly.

That said, I have never seen a 1HD-T built from a 1HZ marked block from Toyota.

We got a guy who does it here. He uses all Toyota parts unless he can get something of equal quality cheaper. He uses one of GBentink's turbos.
Its not cheap ,but $10k for a fully rebuilt turbo diesel is good value I think

Sorry-- think I misunderstood what you said and thought you meant that Toyoda Industries built the engine this way. Painkillers lead to fuzzy mind. ;)

But yes, I agree--$10K for that is a very good price sir.
