1HZ Turbo thread

It is a garrett turbo, I keep the particulars quiet as this has been a big project of mine with alot of time and money involved. I will say that it is bigger than pretty much all of the turbo's being used on 1HZ's today - and works great! I love my truck now, it pulls up hills and runs like a diesel should. I can even pass people on hills. The intercooler really helps in this application too - but not required.

Are you sure it's a garrett turbo? Because it looks exactly like a Precision brand T3/T4 and there are no parts on it which look like the current garrett GT series.
Garrett don't list any T3 style journal bearing cores in any of their catalogues, even the 08. They do mention BB replacement cores for older T3 turbos.

All of my garrett turbos (I have owned about 8) have garrett cast into the compressor housing, turbine housing and stamped on the tag fastened to the bearing core. I couldn't see this in any of the photos, but it could just be hiding behind a hose.

It's definatly not a turbo from the garrett line, but my turbo shop guy tells me that the internals are Garrett. The rest I would rather keep to myself - like I said I put alot of time and effort into this and am building up kits for people. Is that ok?

That makes sense. He's probably put a garrett compressor wheel in, maybe turbine wheel too.
But I'd be wary about telling your customers that it's a garrett, just in case it comes back to bite you.

What are you using for the exhaust manifold?
 
I'll firm things up with him. I'm using the stock manifold for now, a slight mod has to be done to it. Keeping it as simple as possible.
 
How badly did this affect fuel economy (Other than the need to mash the pedal all the time!!)

That's interesting, I check out the Australian boards all the time and don't hear about inevitable head issues - and some vehicles have been running 1HZ's with turbos for a long time.

I'd be interested in knowing what type of turbo, boost, intercooler, setup, temps, etc etc they are running there. I wouldn't expect the same heat issues here in canada that they might encounter in africa.

I have one friend that run a CT26 boosting 11 PSI max in he's 1HZ engine .. with all 1HD-T manifolds .. and the only issue that he found at this time it's the oil press goes little more low than you expect ..
 
I've had time to finally do some fine tuning of the injection pump. I am running 15psi (but don't usually use it) and the EGT's get to 1000 fast but then it takes a long time under load to get to 1200 - the intercooler is working great.

I am just waiting for some more parts to come in and the kit will be complete. I will also be offering ex. manifold and turbo cermichroming for those who are interested. And, I will also sell ex. manifolds with the turbo and flange already mounted - to make life easier and a direct removal and install.
 
i also got a 1HZ modify with intercooler and turbo, but i found that not enuff fuel for the engine, when reach 15psi or more, the car start to lag, then move then lag move and lag, i think i need to modify the fuel pump to 12head. maybe end of this year..

Turbo brand is Turbonetic, and intercooler is Spearco, customize intercooler pipe, will try take pics end of this month, once i back HOmetown :)

That's quick, the landcruiser looks smoke propelled. Do you know which engine the Isuzu Invader has? They are Isuzu Rodeo over here.
 
yeah, thats quick,, i think the Isuzu Rodeo/ we call it as Invader or Space cab, come with engine 2.8 turbo, i think is 4JB1 rite? this invader/rodeo is power lag, if not i think should be win on this match, because this Invader/Rodeo is no power compare to other, there got other landcruiser HZJ75 testing with him with stock ct26 turbo, which engine is 1HD, just adjusted, the power is same with this Invader/rodeo...

i got friend modify 3L 2.8 hilux engine, in double cab, power is amazing.. turbo is savana turbo, then he modify the fin and fuel pump, and also gear ratio, the power was screaming
 
Wow, that looks pretty fast! You are using up alot of fuel on that race:) I run out of fuel at high RPM but I also have my fuel turned down in "economy" mode and to lower the egt's and smoke. If I crank it up it sets me back in the seat that's for sure. If you could find a 1HDT pump it will give you more fuel.

I will dyno my truck shortly, still waiting for my mandrel bends to arrive, I have the aero turbine muffler now, just need the 3 inch pipe!

A lot of the engines that have trouble comes from owners and installers who are unaware of the damage that can be caused by uninhibited use of the turbo.
A little bit of education goes a long way to stop overfuelling of engines and the idea that the 1HZ can go all day with high EGTs.
There have been a few reports of damaged engines in oz but they seem to be dwindling in comparison to the owners who claim a long life from their 1HZ.
 
Exactly Rosco. I have been playing with my setup to see what it can and can't do with different boost, fule and injection timing settings. I also have access to other engines if I pack mine in and I don't mind being the test subject guinea pig. But don't get me wrong - I am not trying to bag my engine.

Today I am running 12psi with low fuel setting, get good power and egt's max at 1000 unless I push it. When the 3 inch exhaust comes in I will dyno it and tune it on the dyno with the help of the tech.

When I build my dedicated off road HZJ79 I will try to boost and fuel it to the max - just for that "oh s***" factor.

yes, need to change 1HD type of fuel pump, if not really not enuff, need to modify the inner part which is 1HZ fuel pump head is 10, and change to 1hd head which is 12head.. and also the top part, which look like a mushroom, or diapharm.. this will give more fuel on higher RPM this what i want :) will upgrade end of this month probably, will upload pics tht time :):cheers:

is tht ur engine 1HZ too? change turbo, but must modify fuel pump too, if not really not enuff power,,, what i know 1HD and 1HZ cant trade to use, just some part only.. because it different engine
