1HZ head warped 0.012"

l have a customer's FJ62 with a swapped in 1HZ,has been overheating and the cooling system get pressurized,so l take the head out,no cracks on head,gasket looked ok except there's a few black spots,,the pressure test was ok,the machine shop said the head is warped 0.012",the manuals said limit is 0.0079",so the machine shop don't want to machine it because they think the valves may hit the piston.Dan at 4 wheelauto can supply me with thicker head gasket,but he also doesn't recommend resurfacing the head,does anybody have any experience on this head issue,do l need a new head?How much?

how much is it to shave the head?
i would get it shaved, bolt it on using the thicker head gasket and turn the engine by hand ...
you will be able to tell right away if there is an issue or not...i am betting you are golden..

Couldnt some accurate measuring resolve it without machining a head that will possibly not work
Another point is you would have to go .0041" over the limit to get all the warp out if Im reading those figues correct.
There are 2-3 aftermarket cyl heads around and go for $1200 in oz. I think the dealer price is about $2000

oh come on where is your sense of adventure?

i guess it comes down to the "thicker" head gasket thickness...

$2000 for the head $200-$400 to swap the valve train over and another couple hundred for shims...plus labour to R&R the head on and off the block...
not cheap.

Hi,
a new head in Canada is $1350,it cost $150 to machine the head plus a valve job,l think they have to shave at lease 0.014" to get a flat surface,l am thinking putting the head on with the old gasket with some silly party on the piston and see how close the valves are fro mthe pistons,or l will just tryyour way ,Wayne.

seriously, you invest $150 and if it doesn't work you swap the valve train into a new head... if it works the customer will love yah, if it doesn't then you can post it up here and we all learn a valuable leason...

i suspect it will work fine...

Ok, I feel I must jump in here with my 2 cents, after having my 2 year adventure with the head on my 13B-T.

I had a very simular problem on a 13B-T that had only 43,000kilometers on it. Pulled the head, changed the gasket (with one that matched exactly) and still had the problem of pressurized coolant, so much so that it would push out all of the coolant in a matter of minutes if I drove it.

Long story short, on the second pull of the head and every test possible at the machine shop, they told me the head was like new. But they could see signs of where it might have been leaking.

Put a new gasket on and problem solved. It seems the original gasket was superceeded with a new part # and I originally replaced the factory one with the exact same one, and what I needed was the superseeded one that had re-enforcement tin around the water ports.

Problem solved.

So I say to you, get a factory gasket, latest superceed if there is one and check it against the old one and see if they have re-enforced tin around the water port holes, is so and the old one does not, I would be confident that was your problem.

If that does not apply, well then it was just a life experience story.

Heads off, get a new one and fxxx the messing around, time is money unless you feel like pulling heads and messing around. Since this is a customers truck do it right, if it were your own them mess with it for weeks and experiement - but not on a customers truck. 1350 well spent in my opinion.

With less chance of fawking the whole engine

The warped head with thicker gasket might last 6 months ,a year perhaps and then maybe go again.
Toyota have specs on engines for a reason.
