1HZ Head Gasket

1990 HZJ77 - 130k or so miles. Upon startup, blowing ridiculous amounts of bubbles in radiator but settles down after 5 mins or so. No milkshake oil and no overheating. Low on power compared to my 2H. Heater works great. Confirmed combustion gasses are present.

So, I’m ready to pull off the head. Any bets it’s the HG? Praying that it’s just the head gasket.

Head's crack between valves and at the pre-cups. Luckily, available from any Toyota dealer anywhere on the planet, even in the US, if you end up needing one.

Thanks Onur. Will pull it and hope for the best. I called Mr. Toyota and they’re on back order for 1700 or so.

MLS gaskets used on diesels don't 'blow' like the old fibre gaskets. If you are lucky, the head is just warped and may be saved, but most likely it will be cracked in the valve bridge, or from a valve to a pre-combustion chamber.

Not wanting to be the bearer of bad news but in my experience, if it improves as the engine warms it's more likely a crack

Not what I’d love to hear, but I am expecting it. Trying to prepare and source a head but they’re on backorder.

First off, this is loads of fun pulling a head off a block by yourself. I’m taking a break as I think I threw my back out. I haven’t got the head all the way out yet so i don’t know about cracks yet. My wife refuses to help.

Time for a liquid reward.

Looks like some nice coolant there…

Is that 3 out of 6 cylinders cracked on visual inspection only? I guess someone got that engine very hot at some point.

At least your block is OK I bought a 3Bii with 567k kms on. I was not planning on using the engine but decided to take a look inside. The crank was like new, only minor wear on the cylinder walls, but some idiot had fitted a 14B head gasket at some point and the pre combustion chambers had undermined the gasket and caused serious erosion on the block, which is now scrap.

At least your block is OK I bought a 3Bii with 567k kms on. I was not planning on using the engine but decided to take a look inside. The crank was like new, only minor wear on the cylinder walls, but some idiot had fitted a 14B head gasket at some point and the pre combustion chambers had undermined the gasket and caused serious erosion on the block, which is now scrap.

Ooof. Makes for a very heavy paper weight don’t it?

Ordered it today - should be a couple weeks. I’ve never ordered a head off Toyota, but I’m assuming the valve guides and seats are in already?
