I have a 1HZ engine in my Land Cruiser BJ70 that has a coolant leak in the cover of the block mounted oil cooler. The leak is directly behind the fuel injection pump and just below and to the left of the top nut (of the two) where the u-shaped oil cooler pipe is attached inside the cover. I am in Costa Rica and a new oil cooler cover is not available here so I have ordered one through the local Toyota Dealer from Japan that will take a month or more to get here.

I am thinking about a temporary fix so I can drive the vehicle for the next month. The hole diameter is about 1/4 inch or 6mm, quite sizeable.

I have tried to photograph the hole but it is a spot that is very difficult to photograph.

I do not have access to JB Weld here but there are epoxies from Loctite available that can withstand 110 deg C. I was thinking about using a cut off bolt to partially block the hole and then applying epoxy over it. I am hoping that someone else may have encountered this problem before and has a better solution.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

The problem will be the pressure if it seals. I might try a large screw and see if I can "thread" it as it screws in. But if its corroded , the hole may get bigger. Another way might be to tap a piece of wood into the hole.
I would prefer to put if off the road but Im guessing you need it.

Thanks for your input. I believe the engine is a1996 model and it appears that the cover is cast iron if that makes sense. A screw is a good idea for sure - it may break away more of the metal as you say. The replacement cover will be aluminum and I assume the newer models had aluminum covers that should not corrode.

I thought it was alloy but you could be right, its a long time since I pulled one off. How much is a new one? They all had the same part # from 90-16 so they would all be the same metal

The cost of a new one here in Costa Rica is only 68 US dollars. Very cheap I thought. I have ordered a new aluminum cover and it will arrive at the end of June. I certainly want to replace it but I am trying to come up with a short term fix so I can use the truck temporarily. Keeping a close eye on the repair to ensure I do not lose coolant.
