1HDT to 1HDFT conversion question

I am changing over from a 1HDT to an intercooled 1HDFT with G-turbo. I am struggling with the very different preheating systems. The 1HDT still had glow plugs, with the resistor shebang on the manifold. The 1HDFT has the heater element bolted between the crossover pipe and the manifold. I have no idea about resistors.
For those that have done this swap and worked with the 1HDT wiring harness, how did you do this?

Unless your in a very cold climate, Just pull the guts out of the heater.
Most of us 1hdft owner's remove them any way.

In brief: Because my 1HDT is a complete POS.

Longer: I exchanged a very high mileage 1HDT against a completely rebuilt one. That thing created nothing but problems. It shook and vibrated and we could never figure out why.
Then it burned up because my turbo pumped a ton of oil into the engine and it started to run on that.
So we rebuilt it completely again, new everything including the crank, sleeved the cylinders to go back to standard size, whatever. Completely rebuilt injection pump and injectors...
Then the overflow started bubbling, the head was tested and found to be cracked. So I put a brand new head on. Oh Joy.
200 miles later oil started to show up in the rad overflow. That did it and I decided to throw it out.
The only explanation I have is that this engine had a horrible maintenance history, and every time I fix something, the next weak link breaks. I have enough of it. The only thing still left to exchange is the block, and I don't feel like doing that.

I will be parting it out soon, anyone needs 1HDT parts? Pump? Head? Injectors? manifolds/turbo for turbo kit...I'll create thread then...

Then I found a 1HDFT on craigslist SF of all places, and bought it. When we opened the engine up, it turned out to be brans spanking new, as in never run. So I am building that up, finding the missing parts, and putting it into my truck, with an intercooler and a G-turbo.

Seriously? Now I feel like a fool for spending 200$ on a new heater.
Anyway, I want it working, at least in the beginning. Any advice on the wiring?

The blocks are almost identical. Some more sensors on the FT, that's it.

The heads are completely different. 24 valves instead of 12, free flowing manifolds, different preheating, different turbo. Different injection pump with more volume and more pressure, different injectors.
The HDFT has a lot more potential than the HDT, and is a much more modern engine.

This, if you did the swap for more power. It's hardly worth the effort. There isn't alot more potential for power. It flows a little better up top - that's it. After full power up kits fitted to both there is hardly any difference.

I can use the power. The HDT was all factory, the HDFT will have an intercooler and more psi at lower rpm...I know the two engines won't be comparable, as one was stock, the other will be built.

Sorry i carnt help with the wiring.
I completely removed mine years ago when i fitted a Safari front mount intercooler.

The intercooler came with a adapter block to replace the heater.
I then cut the wire & removed the connection from the battery.

These motors dont realy have trouble starting with out it.
As an example it was around 0 deg c yesterday morning & it fired up with in a few second's.

I reckon the later HDFT would have to be the better motor !! After what I ve been through with my POS 93 eighty series ?? They shuold have intercooled all turbos so when they blow up the turbo it would at least stop the engine itself from being destroyed .. I may put one on mine too one day If I can afford it??

An intercooler doesn't always stop bits of a turbo from getting to an engine it will hopefully stop it or it will minimise the potential damage

Correct, still a CT26, but with different housing and connectors to the air intake.

Resurrecting this thread as I'm thinking of doing the same conversion. I wanted to know if the head is a straight bolt on the D-T engine and all that it requires is a few minor mods to fit pipes cables and election. Will be pitting the FT pump as well.

I know this is an old thread but did you ever switch to the FT and how did it go?

I am starting to think about doing it but not sure it's worth the effort....
