That sounds more like a transmission issue.

Can anyone chime in on why their are times where I am at a dead stop in the mtns and I have to floor it and black smoke is building everywhere but the truck is barely moving at all...

Less oxygen. Black smoke means more fuel than air.

ill second this, check your trans fluid.

Everytime my trans has died I've not had black smoke issues. Smoke is less likely because they're no load on the motor.

Black smoke on a diesel is always excess fuel for the amount of air

It could be altitude. Turbo/boost related. Air intake related. Or over fuel/tuning related.

Its getting kinda brown for sure.

I already have a new trans filter kit.

I have a new aluminum radiator as well with the built in trans cooler.

Should I do just a drain an fill on the transmission or a complete flush?

Do a flush using the trans cooler line.

If he's trying to get the truck to move, and giving it gas and going nowhere, but seeing black smoke, there's a load on the motor in that situation, and a reason the truck isn't moving. I'd be looking at the trans as the 1st thing as well.

If the trans is slipping what load is on the motor?

Thats the thing the trans hasnt been slipping.

This symptom has only happened in the mtns and it feels like I am overcoming a lot of resistance. One time I was at 75% throttle the whole climb and felt like my brakes were holding me back. But checking the rotors they were not hot like a stuck brake pad would produce.

I have not had a A/T overtemp light kick on at all

Will a tranny flush fix this, or am I getting to a point of a rebuild

When you checked the fluid level, did you do it with the engine/trans fluid hot or cold?

I may be preaching to the choir here, but I'll do it anyways: trans fluid is checked hot, engine running, on a flat/level surface, slowly shift the trans from P through all the gears, and back to either N or P, then check the fluid level on the dipstick.

Once you're sure the trans fluid level is correct, you can think about what your next step should be.

All 3 of my trans failures on my hdj were just massive amounts of slip. The motor revved as high as it wanted and the truck wouldn't move, or would barely move.

If the rpms aren't climbing and the motor is laboring and it's belching black I'd suspect an air delivery problem.

Maybe I missed it in here, but did you end up installing a boost gauge? Are you getting boost? Eg. is your turbo spooling up? I would think no boost would mean a slow truck and black smoke.

I do know to do this, but last night I did not because about 2 weeks ago I did the fluid level check and it has enough fluid. Its just getting dark.

It will get boost just fine, I have a new airfilter and it am producing up to 15lbs.

Its just this weird times in the mtns typically when I come to a stop and need to move again
I wish I would have recorded it

I wouldn't expect dirty fluid to cause the truck to not want to move when at altitude...just can't see the connection there.

Do you have an EGT gauge, and do we know what EGT's are doing when the black smoke/won't move symptoms are happening? That would help confirm what level of load the engine is seeing.

Your truck is a '93, so it should have the electronically controlled A442F, correct?

EGT's climb between 600-900F.

I do have a TorFab airbox on its way, should help with Air delivery and EGT's

So the engine is definitely seeing load when this happens.

Have you adjusted the trans kickdown cable to spec? They stretch over the years, and can affect trans function pretty dramatically when out of adjustment.

Thats a bit foreign to me.

Just need pointed in the right direction in the service manual to perform/check that, or a right up from this website to follow

Which trans have you got?
