Recently got an HDJ81 that has 3” straight exhaust with a muffler. Problem is that the exhaust smell is super strong at times. Way more than I remember my BJ60 being.

I could live with it, but my wife hates it and I don’t want to be that guy out on the trail that nobody wants to drive behind.

Is a diesel catalytic converter a thing? I’ve searched and found mainly the sentiment that it is what it is and make sure it’s current on maintenance.

Are you saying that exhaust gases are coming into the car, or that the exhaust generally stinks?

Generally stinks. Windows down in town traffic the breeze will blow it into the cab too.

A leak is also a possibility. But walking behind it while it’s running makes my clothes smell after.

Curious if your injectors are in good health? I had the same problem, it ended up being my injectors where real bad. Popping at 1,500 when it should be much higher.

As I see it, it can only really be two things. Most likely unburned fuel, from dirty/leaking injectors or restriction in the air system. It might also be burning oil - diesel engines can burn ngine oil without much smoke (unlike a petrol engine).

Is the engine consuming oil? If you floor the accelerator does it smoke? What colour?

I don’t know the history on the injectors and will look into getting these rebuilt soon.

Small amount of black smoke at wide open throttle in second or third gear. Seems normal to me.

Oil was changed when I bought the truck about 4,000 km ago. Dipstick still shows full.

There is gray smoke for less than a minute after cold start up at freezing this morning.

My main question: is there anything in the exhaust that can be done to help?

Not sure what your history is, injector service or valve adjustment could be in order. Pump timing could be off. make sure everything is good first however to answer your question they do make diesel catalytic converters. Rawtek makes one in 3" im going to try it out on my build.
