My Prado needs new tires. They currently have 195/85/16 Toyo tires (light truck tires) and I’m not looking to get bigger tires. The car is a daily driver on highways so I’d like something that does not negatively affect gas mileage. Any recommendations on brand?

You sure about that size?

As for brand and type, depends on your budget - so, what is your budget? And aside from DD/highway, do you take it offroad? e.g. would an all season work better for you than an all terrain?

265/70r16 was common stock size.

Why bigger tires ?
You well know that bigger will affect your daily confort and gas consumption!
If you don’t do any ( serious) off road I would stay on those strictly all terrain or e en road tires .
If you do very occasionally off road , get a second set of mud , just for fun .
Just my experience

You probably can't go wrong with any know name brand. If you are budget conscious there are tons on new takeoffs from 4Runners and Tacomas on Craigslist, usually with new wheels for a decent price.
A good on/off road tire is a BFG KO2. I have ran them for decades on many different vehicles and will continue to do so.

Update: I’m attaching a photo of the current tire, but damned if I can’t find a similar size anywhere. Unless I’m somehow reading the tire size wrong, I might need to change the tire size just to find something that I can buy.

The car doesn’t go off-road, and I’d like to stay under $300/tire. Thanks in advance!

I have never seen that size in person, very cool (and odd).

A 245/70r16 is slightly taller and a smidge wider, and they are plentiful. As @javelinadave said, plenty of Taco and 4R take-off wheels and tires are available, and the Taco came with the 245 size.

I would avoid E-rated tires, and even C-rated - go with SL's. There's a huge weight advantage of SL vs E or C, and imho it is noticeable in daily driving; and in ride comfort. And it sounds like SL would be good for you since you don't need the reinforced carcass for 'wheeling. Full disclosure: I run Hankook Dynapro AT Extreme SL in 245/75r17 and am super happy, excellent onroad and perfectly fine for the bunny trails I ride.

Also agreed, stick with known reputable brands, you'll have your choice at that price point (mine were $180/ea).

Thank you, this is incredibly helpful.

I wound up with Mazama Open Range ATs on my 96 Prado, purely because Les Schwab had them in stock and could get me in immediately, and I was in a severe time crunch.

Wouldn't have been my first(or tenth) choice due to cost and having never heard of them before. I paid right around $1200 for four, with tax. Haven't had them long enough to have an opinion yet, haven't even driven on wet pavement with them yet.

Unless they're absolutely stellar and last forever, I won't be going with them again. With more time on my side I think I could get completely equivalent tires for about half the price.

Do you have any pics of how your vehicle sits on the 195/85/16?
I would like to get something that will fit but is narrower and taller than stock.
Nothing too wild that I would need to also invest in a lift.
(I just like the look of taller/narrow)

Thanks, MVT

Just got my 235/85/16 's put on.
About an inch taller and an inch narrower than stock.
I too like the taller/narrower look.
(Also, stock ride height).
Woo, hoo. I now have a 1/2 inch lift.
Don't have any real good pictures, but here are a couple:

Only 10 miles on them, but the noise is negligible.
Definitely not the roar you hear from half a mile away. At least so far.
Also, won't get to test their 'offroad-ability' for a couple weeks or so.

Alrighty, have some more miles on my Mazama Open Range tires. Not recommended, they're not very sure footed in standing water. This is Oregon, the rainy season is 9 months here, that is sub ideal. Hope they do a lot better on ice.

The Kumho Crugen HT51s I had on my Subaru did far better in wet, are available in LT versions and Land Cruiser sizes, were very good on ice for a non-winter tire, and cost half what these Mazamas cost.

Definitely won't be buying these again.
