I'm thinking real serious about selling my 2002 double cab Taco and buying a 100 series LC. I'm thinking 98 or 99 so I can get the rear locker option and my question is, was rear air offered in the 1998? I know I've seen it in the 99's but every 98 I've spotted doesn't have rear air. Just curious if they're out there. Thanks!

Thanks guys. Looks like I have my search narrowed down to a 99 only. I can't see having an SUV that large without rear air since mine will be more of a people hauler than a trail rider. I don't use a locker that often but it's nice to have it when you do need it. I really like my Taco but I miss the heck out of having a Land Cruiser. I've never had a 100 series but I've tried out a couple and I really like the ride.
The rear AC is nice to have, and very effective. There's a separate evaporator and air handler, and separate temp control with Auto setting serving the rear. When we were using the third row seating for kids it was a real plus.

Probably. There are four elements:
- installing the evap & air handler with associated wiring if the harness is not there in the 98
- installing air ducting from evap and outlets in headliner
- installing and wiring rear HVAC control in headliner
- new high & low side refrigerant lines plus tapping them into the existing circuit
Best bet would be to take everything off a donor 99, with lots of pics, and transplant to the 98. Would be best to make up new flexible refrigerant lines and tee them into the front circuit. The stock lines are known to fail.
Its not a small job. I'd find a nice 99 or later with rear air.
No rear AC for 98. I'd say depending on where you live it's either totally unecessary or absolutely mandatory. I lived in Vegas for 8 years and Arizona before that where you have to have it. I live in Denver now and don't have kids or even passengers often, so it's not necessary at all for me now. I have a 98 and love it!

See rear heat in my opinion is more important..my 1998 was ordered and delivered to Hawaii, so I got no heated seats or rear heater! That's an option I wish I had for the winter ski trips with my buddies in the back. To be honest though, the heater is so strong I've never had anyone complain!
My biggest argument for rear AC is to keep the dog cool when he's back there in the summer as heat can be so hard on them. For the humans it's simply comfort and not as critical IMHO.

^^ This. In lieu of a rear roll-down, the rear a/c does a good job for the dog.
I will say that the rear will knock down the temp in the vehicle in a hurry. Remember, it's a completely separate evaporator and fan back there so it's not just splitting the cold air from the front and sending it back.
