I had an issue with my power steering being intermittent. No humming or noise from the power steering pump but replaced it anyway assuming that would fix the problem. Well here I am, no change still no power steering. I read a thread where someone said loss of oil pressure could cause loss of power steering on an 80.? Sorry for my ignorance but the pump is gear driven is the gear run off the oil pump? I don't seem to have a loss of oil pressure but I don't really know what else it could be.?

I think you are referring to the situation where the crank pulley bolt is not properly torqued to 305 ft-lbs which can cause both the oil pump and power steering to not function properly. This is on the 1FZ-FE motor. On the 3FE there is a belt driven power steering pump.

You should use the proper terminology in the title. A 95, 96, 97 are all FZJ80 where the 91 and 92 are FJ80. Please correct the thread title for those searching in the future.

So an update on my power steering issue. I have now replaced the power steering pump, the steering box, high and low pressure lines and flushed the fluid in the system. I jacked up the front end and checked to see if anything was locked up or binding (tie rod, drag link)
everything moves freely knuckles are fine. I'm at a loss.?

Now after new power steering pump, steering box, high and low pressure lines no change. I'm at a loss.

Did you check the crank pulley bolt? Also, are you certain your front axle is not locked? If it is, it's very hard to turn. Broken parts in the knuckle could possibly make it hard to turn as well. It's more likely to be an issue at the crank though.

Did you check the torque on the crank pulley nut yet? It is critical to be at the full FSM torque.

front is unlocked and crank pulley bolt is good. I'm at a loss. Any chance that air is trapped in the high pressure line where it turns to come back up to go in to the top of the steering box?

Correction. I misread the torque specs. Actual torque is suppose to be 304 foot lbs. I was off by 200 lbs.! Hopefully this will resolve my issue.
Did it resolve the power steering issue? If not the crank pulley bolt being loose, was it something else?

Member profile shows they were last seen visiting MUD over 2 years ago. It's a good question though. Are you having problems with your PS?

Yes, just yesterday steering wheel became nearly impossible to turn when slowly turning into my driveway from a stop position. As soon as some gas was given it seemed like the higher RPM allowed the PS to kick back on. I tried to reproduce the problem several times, but is all working fine now. Seems very unsafe if it goes out again somewhere other then my driveway.
