Wanted 1995-1997 FZJ80 in New England

Hello,

First, this forum is great, it's taught me a ton in my month and a half of lurking here.

I've started my search a few weeks back for a FZJ80. I'd like a 1995-1997 (Airbags and ABS are a must since my wife may be driving the truck as well). I'm hoping for under 150K miles with maintenance records. New England area is preferred.

I'm confused by dealers asking for 20K+ for a truck with 90K miles. I'd probably pay 9-11for one with under 100K miles if everything was very well sorted and maintained, with no major issues. I'm not sure that provides a good reference point or not, but I do NOT think 10K for a 150K truck with accidents and no maintenance history is reasonable (most of the local dealerships are in that range, 10-11K with no real maintenance records and some with accidents). Perhaps my standards are too high? For example, I would probably pay ~9-10K give or take for the Arizona no rust "virgin" truck on ebay, but I can't get out to Arizona to check it out. I won't buy a truck sight unseen.

Anyway, if anyone has a rust free, clean rig, please let me know. I'm actually not going to off road the truck too much, which may disgust some of you. I just want a very solid truck that I can keep for a very long time. I'm going to take it to NH on mt biking/ski trips, to the cape for some summer trips, maybe some beach driving (with a good washing immediately after).

If the truck has issues, just let me know. I'll probably find them anyway, I'll also have the truck checked by a mechanic and thrown on a lift before purchasing(my expense of course). I'm not opposed to fixing issues, as long as the price takes into account that I'm going to do the fix.

Please feel free to contact me if you have a rig that you think I'd be interested in.

Thank you and thanks for all the knowledge I've learned from this forum.

Todd

I live in NH and just got one with 154K, $5800. Clean truck and honest owner. Needs a birfs and full axle rebuild and brake lines to be drivable. So that puts me at $8000 for a truck with 154K. I did a lot of shopping.

Good luck with your search, be ready to buy when one shows up as the MUD community is pretty competitive when it comes to finding creampuffs!

There are a couple promising ones in MA now:
97 Limited Addition Toyota land cruiser (sounds a bit weird in the ad)
97 Land Cruiser Locking Diffs (looks ok too)

There is also one that was for sale in Maine for a fair price and it looked clean. It was here on MUD.

Also, some of the best potential deals I saw were located in NYC, which may be do-able for you depending on location.

I personally flew to Newark to buy one and ended up buying a ticket home the same day, with no car (bad owner, bad axles, and potentially bad HG). Waste of $500 bucks and a day of my life.

Congrats on the purchase, Alex! Post some pics! It's true there are some potential deals here in NYC. There are some people that keep them in a garage and city people don't usually drive much. If I can be of any help let me know. I'll always try to help out a Mudder, especially a native New Englander such as myself.

thanks for the replies

Thank you for the replies!

I've checked out or am currently talking to all the owners of the trucks listed, but thank you for the leads! The one in Sommerville has been crashed. It's also got 135K miles, not 125K. 135K + crash != 10K to me, but I may be too picky.

BTW, the one in Newton is a great truck. If there's a DIY'er on here, it's a solid truck with a few issues that the owner has listed. Everything on it works and it's super clean. Unfortunately, I don't have time right now to DIY, so I'd have to pay somebody to fix the Y-pipe/#1 cat and rear diff, so it'd be quite pricey. Also, my OCD would probably make me replace the tires, another few hundred. The owner is an honest guy too. I'd buy this truck, but based on the work it needs, the owner and I just couldn't reach a deal.

Aboisvert, I feel your pain! I actually drove to NYC in a 1 way rental car to check out a few trucks in Brooklyn and surrounding. Sadly, I drove home in that same rental car. A waste of 100 bucks and a day of my life. NYC does seem to have a few! If anyone is thinking about the grey one in Brooklyn, PM me. I'll tell you about it.

I'm going to email today about an LX450 on Ebay with 113K miles. My wife thinks I'm insane to waste a day driving to NYC and back. I may be.

Anyway, thank you for all the help! The search continues!

Thanks,
Todd

Take your wife with you and make a weekend of it. I live in Brooklyn so let me know if you see any more you want me to look at. Good luck!

No worries

Hey,

No worries at all, i appreciate the suggestions. Yeah, I'm looking for a less aggressive, hopefully well sorted truck.

There was one in Ohio with 58K miles listed for 12,900 that sold this week. It was more than I wanted to spend, but it was barely broken in. I wonder what it ended up selling for?

Perhaps I'll call that Europa and see if they are open to offers.

Thanks!

I'm all over the place and probably in way over my head with Brian's, but sanity was never a finer point, so pursuing.....to a point.

Finally looked at a local offering at the Lexus dealer I've bought a GX 470 and the current 460 from, so I trust the information to be valid.

97 80 no lockers, no history, 239k, assumed HG issues. Slated for auction, that he stated would bring $6,500. Buy it today price of $6k.

I wish my FJC was this hard to find.

Looks like I just missed out (got outbid) on a local cruiser! Doht!

Anyway, I'm still in the market. The 97 "Collectors addition" one near me sold. The 97 with lockers is the one I just got outbid on. There's another local one at a dealer that looks "ok" but I get a bad feeling from it.

I'm going to check out that truck in NJ with 113K miles this Thursday, so hopefully that will work out. The only thing I can see on it is it had it's rear drivers quarter panel repaired and the drivers seat needs a new bottom. The guy said he'd take off money for those issues, so hopefully that one will work out.

If anyone knows of any other trucks (1995-1997) with low miles in New England or the tri-state area, I'd greatly appreciate it if you let me know!

Thanks,
Todd
