OK. To clarify, you put in oil that is THINNER than what was in it. Unrelated but I think the oil you just put in is not a good idea.

Under the filler cap - if it's black and thin oily deposits no problem. If it's yellowy tan and thicker deposits you may have a HG problem.

white smoke = blown head gasket

Sorry to say that white smoke on start up is a tell tell sign of a blown head gasket. The motor can run rough (doesn't always) until the water is burned off. The compression from the cylinder keeps the water out once you have started the motor.

Then my headgasket has been blown for almost 70k miles. Mine always smokes a little after extended ideling, putting around on the trail at start up on a cool day after sitting for a few hours.

IMO it's the valve guide seals. I'm waiting for my headgasket to blow before I do a valve job.

YOU GUY's ARE KILLING ME!!! He lives in FL! There is a LOT of humidity in FL! I am from GA (also a lot of humidity) everyday no matter what car I drove when I cranked it in the morning there was white smoke!....some days just a little some days alot! The more humid it is the more you have!

It sounds to me like he has a little valve seat oil leaking combined with condensation that is producing a light blueish smoke in the morning!.....very common and not a big deal!!!

IF YOU ARE NOT LOOSING COOLANT THEN YOU DON'T HAVE A BLOWN HEADGASKET!!!

Stop worring about this and :steer: dude! JM 0.2!

hey ,when you get several posts saying head gasket ..it's starting to make me a little nervous. The smokes not going away so gotta address the problem right?

And that number is very small in comparison to how many people who are NOT posting about their HG.

Like the last two posts said, don't worry about the HG. Blue smoke = oil. Your truck burns a little. Comes with age. Keep it topped off and you'll be fine.

If you're that concerned do a leakdown and compression test. That will tell you right away if there's a problem or not.

The tests are not expensive, and probably well worth your peace of mind.

That being said, x2 on what Lka just said. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks,
I have a compression test scheduled this weekend and will post verdict.

you may want to try the bubble test. With the engine good and hot, remove the lid from the coolant overflow container. Do not remove the hose from the liquid. Rev the engine to somewhere around 3K and see if there are bubbles in the overflow resevoire. There are lots of threads on this test if you want more detail.
