Can anyone tell me if the automatic hubs that came stock with my 411 axels can be converted to manual hubs easily?
And can anyone explain to me how this "automatic" system works. Does it come in and out automatically? I'm having some problems engaging both sides engaged simultainiously. I have not had the truck long and am trying to figure it out, am considering getting manual hubs which are more reliable.
Any information would be welcome, and I can be reached by email at bwsteele@telus.net if thats easier. I can call you back too.

You can install standard hubs to your front end.

you need to change the parts out including the spindle out with donor parts from a NA model (or older JDM)

Wayne, does that include swapping everything from the spindle, hub, bearings, locking hubs etc - or can you just replace the spindle and the manual locking hub?

Regards

the hub itself is different (4 bolt hub vs 6 bolt and the spindle has the wires going through it... might as well do the job right while you are in there...

OK, Good to know. I have a bunch of new hubs and spindles here if anyone needs them.

Regards

Interesting. This might explain why the P/O of my 77 switched to manual hubs.

Anyone know what the problem is with Toyota's electronic hubs?

There are some little brushes inside the hub - like brushes on an electric motor - those brushed wear out , contacts get dirty etc etc. I just think there are too many things to go wrong in the hubs after 15 years of service. Going manual is the way to go in my opinion.

Mine weren't working, and when I took them apart, the brushes weren't making contact with the slip-ring. There is a little hole in the housing, to insert a small wire to hold the brushes retracted when you re-assemble them - I used a piece of concrete tie-wire IIRC - if that isn't done, and the hub is forced back into place, the brushes bend and don't make contact with the slip ring surface..

I was thinking that I might machine a little "manual" override into the hub, so you could engage the hubs if I really needed to. I currently find that they don't lock about 10% of time, first try.

I've got a nice used set of manual hubs to trade for a set of electric ones if anyone wants to.
