My '91 Prado suddenly began having issues starting recently. Initially it required multiple long cranks but would start and run normally. Then it started needing really long cranking and produced lots of white smoke on start up but then would run normally. Now it won't start at all. The fuel priming pump on the filter housing never gets firm. The OBD shows code 2. Injectors and glow plugs are probably original and the truck has 165K kms on it.
My 2LTE almost certainly has a cracked head. It overheated a while ago due to a bad radiator. I have since replaced it with an aluminum rad and the truck runs very cool but it consumes plenty of coolant.
The engine has an intercooler, boost controller, catch can, EGR delete and side dump exhaust. The fuel is turned up at the spill valve control and it's running 14-15 lbs of boost. EGT's max out around 1150 F but I back off around 1000 F. The R151 has given me no issues.
I've read everything I can find about my no start issue so I think it's time to post.
So far I have done the following:
- Checked for voltage drop when glow plugs kick on.
- Replaced the water separator o-ring on the fuel filter after I saw a small leak.
- Inspected the turbo outlet and throttle inlet to look for copious blow by.
- Confirmed there is fuel getting to the injector pump at the inlet banjo by loosening the bolt and cranking.
- Confirmed fuel at the injectors by cracking the fuel lines and cranking the engine.
- In desperation I sprayed some starting fluid on the air filter; this got it to start once or twice, but now won't.
I know the LJ isn't the most desirable 70 Series, particularly for reliability issues. However, I acquired this truck when there weren't very many 70's available and I've gotten it fairly dialed in outside of the powertrain. I re-geared the transfercase and converted to manual hubs. The truck is nicely set up with ARB's front and rear, suspension, bumper, winch, rack etc. My Land Rover 110 is much more reliable and capable for serious adventures but the Prado is pretty civilized and I use it a lot on the ranch where I work. I'd rather keep the Prado going and plan on doing the head at some point.
Any help or direction for diag would be appreciated.
