I am working on a friend's 91 land cruiser and am having trouble with starting. If I turn the key I can hear the start relay click. I removed the relay and jumped it with no results. I don't hear any clicking from starter solenoid . The shifter won't move with the key turned on. Can a faulty brake switch keep the car from starting and shifting. I mainly work on old cars and not familiar with anything older than 1970s

There is no starter relay.
The logic for the starter circuit is pretty simple on these trucks in stock form: FL AM1/Fuse AM1/ignition switch/neutral start switch/starter solenoid. Nothing else effects that circuit. The motor side of the starter is connected directly to the battery positive terminal.

Since you appear to be having other electrical issues, check the 3 fusible links off the positive battery terminal. Use a meter, not your eyeballs.
