This truck is a huge deal compared to where I am with my rig. I no longer daily drive mine however, and would not have daily'd it for 2 years retrospectively. I would love a 5 gear but am reluctant to have it turning a high rpm to maintain 65-70 mph on the U.S. road trips that I reserve the 81 for now. I think you should buy TLC81s rig- it is a known quantity and he has all the bugs worked out, an expensive undertaking in itself. Then I would buy a super cheap d/d. Part time kit? Sure, but only if it is going to be a daily.
A big coil sprung diesel wagon is the best rig for my direction which is 12 hours at freeway speed followed by horrible desert washboard. No leafs for me on those tracks ( been there, spilled the beer!)
Also- I like to sleep in the truck, as desert winds are brutal on tents...
