Hi and thanks for taking the time to look at my ad.

Up for sale is my beloved 1991 fj80 with 215K miles.

I'm not sure how to write an effective advertisement so instead I'm just going to give you as much history on the rig as possible.

I purchased it about 4 years ago from a friend in Redding CA because he wanted to buy a pickup truck. At the time, it had a dented door and rocker panel on the passenger side. We replaced the door skin and cut out the damager rocker panel.

Then i towed it to Valley Hybrids in Stockton CA where it had all the fluids replaced, rewired the dual battery system, replaced both batteries (Optima Red and Yellow top), and balanced the rear driveshaft.

After the work in Stockton I drove it home to southern Orange County California (about a 400 mile drive). Made it home without any issues.

The sunroof was leaking so I took out all the carpet to make sure it wasn't trapping any moisture. You can inspect the floorboards and see there isn’t any rust. For anyone who is considering taking out their carpet, I recommend figuring out a way to keep the heat out. Summers are brutal because all the heat from the transmission and engine bay just radiate into the cabin.

Then I made an appointment at TLC in Chatsworth CA to see if they would be interested in bringing it back to the glory days. To make a long story short, they said it would be more cost effective to start with a better specimen. I still had them do a Valve Adjustment, replace the valve cover gasket, and replace the main hose that goes from the air filter to the MAF.

Also, TLC did a full examination of the rig and gave me a list of all the issues and potential future repairs. It's part of their intake process, cost like $500.00

Anyways… I got it back with a huge list of maintenance to complete from TLC and did most of it myself. Plugs, wires, distributor and rotor, pcv valve, some broken vacuum lines, rebuilt the MAF (not personally... took it to a rebuilder).

It started developing a strange ailment that I couldn't figure out. The problem was that it would start perfectly when cold, but then wouldn't start again if the motor was warmed up. I could turn it on in the morning and drive to the store but then not be able to start again in the parking lot till everything cooled down about 6 hours later. While chasing this issue I had the starter rebuilt (has a mean green high torque starter), replaced the fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, fuel filter and some other fuel related items and gave up. None of those repairs worked. I finally sent it to Yotamasters in Corona CA. They were able to diagnose and replace the failing ignition switch.

Then it started feeling like the transmission was slipping while on the highway. I took it to a closer shop called AOE (American Overland Expedition) in Laguna Hills CA. Lucky for me, it just needed an adjustment to the kickdown cable.

Then came a big clunk/jerk when shifting from Park to Drive. I took it back to AOE in Laguna Hills CA. We chased that issue down to manual diff lockers on the front axle. The clunk was coming from all the slop in the aftermarket manual lockers. I removed the aftermarket manual lockers and had both axles completely rebuilt. Also replaced the front ring and pinion. While chasing this issue, AOE removed the transfer case because it was the first suspect but the rebuilder said it looked great and didn't need any work. It’s finally shifting smoothly. During that trip to the shop I learned that the rear axle has positraction. (I’ll make a list of all the repairs/upgrades/modification at the bottom of this post so they are all in one place.)

Then the Hot start issue came back and off to Yotamasters it went. This time they found the neutral safety switch to be malfunctioning and we decided to just bypass the thing. So if you put the rig in Drive and crank the key, it will lurch forward (kinda like starting a manual in 1st gear without having your foot on the clutch).

Finally the brakes... I rebuilt both calipers in the front along with the pads, replaced the braked booster, had the rear drums adjusted and the parking brake pulled in. This work was split between AOE and Yotamasters. Somewhere in there I also had all the lugs and studs replaced because I don't have the “lug key”.

Sometime after that i decided it was time to have the windows retinted (the old tint looked like it was at least 10 years old) and a new radio with some speakers installed. An audio shop in Mission Viejo CA did the work. I can get you the name if you'd like because the tint has a lifetime warranty.

It passed emissions twice under my care and is ready for life with someone else.

Ok on to the list of repairs/modifications/upgrades.

The Bad:

1. The sunroof leaks so I just gorilla taped it shut and haven’t had a problem since. Motor/button works, the seal needs to be replaced.

2. There is no carpet. Which technically can be viewed as a positive.

3. The front driver seat has some wear on it.

4. The Dual battery remote needs to be repaired or replaced. It works but has a loose wire.

5. The tires need to be replaced because they are old

6. Needs body work to finish the repair on the passenger rocker panel. The replacement piece is welded in. The welding isn’t pretty.

7. Rear lift gate is dented and doesn’t fully latch. It latches and holds but I feel like it could hold it closer. Dent came improper use of tire carrier. (tire carrier is no longer installed)

8. Could totally use a new paint

9. The fender flare on the front driver side is about ready to retire.

10. The AC doesn’t work. I have the pump but never tried to install. Not sure if pump works.

11. That’s about all I can think of at this point.

And lastly, Why am I selling it? Because I don’t use it as much as I thought I would. I’ve owned it for about 4 years and have put less than 8K miles on it during this time. Time for someone else to enjoy. asking $8,000.00. feel free to call or text with questions. 602.796.6931

I live in Laguna Niguel CA.
