"I am trying to find and import a 1985/1986 HJ75 Trayback from either Australia or New Zealand and if I am successful I will need to thin the herd. I am trying to determine the interest level in my 1990 LJ78 RHD diesel ( legally titled and registered in the State of Georgia) if I offer it for sale or trade.
It has an updated 3L head, 2-1/2" exhaust, recored radiator,
rebuilt turbo with pyrometer, Rancho lift with new ARB shocks,
auto transmission and A/C
I can be reached at "78Toyota@gmail.com
There may issues with the diesel engine in California or so I am told. Thanks.......1978HJ45

75 for sale

I have a 1995 hzj75 for sale but obviously u said u were looking for a 85, in your thread it says u have a legally titled cruiser which is kinda a false statement as it has to b 25yrs old to b 100% legally titled in the USA. You are much smarter to go with a hz 75 rather than a old high km 2h. It may b extremely tough to sell a 78 series in the high teens as anybody can buy 1 from auction for under 5g.

drop me a pm if interested in my HZ75.

no worries if not and good luck with the prado sale. tough cruiser market, There is about 20 of them for sale in western BC due to the fact that almost every 1 is staying far away from them as they just seem to b $ pits even when u do the head correctly.

just doesnt make sense to replace your 3l with a even crappier 2h. might as well get something of vaule that is proven to go past 400 000kms

Even though the Forum may not be the most suitable format to respond to your "informative" reply, I will give it a shot anyway.
My first premise is that you are a resident of Canada and not the U.S. ( I never met a Canadian I did not like...heck I even like "Crushers"). Keeping that in mind, in the eyes of the State of Georgia ( who issued the title and registration ) the LJ78 is 100% legal and insured. I am also fairly sure I did not mention a price in the thread. I did however mention the words "mid teens or best offer" not high teens as a tentative price range. You also mention that the LJ78's routinely sell at Canadian auctions in the 5K range. The key word there being Canadian not U.S. ( I have never seen a LJ78 at any U.S. automobile auction). As for my desire to find a HJ75, I am told that the only ones available to me ( to legally import from Australia) is the 1985/1986 models which I believe only offer the "crappy 2H". If you have additional information on this subject I would be glad to hear from you. Since I already have the "crappy 3L driving the even crappier 2H ( I am quoting here) should be an easy transition. Take care...........1978HJ75

The 2h might be a slow tractor motor but there is nothing wrong with them as far as Tonkin along and reliablility , I'm not a diesel cruiser fan but mates and family that have had them have never had dramas ,last I checked my old ladies partners 75 series 85 2h troopy the odo read 7xx,xxx km and still going, blows your 400000 km claim away

they have all the goodies great seats int, coil spring comfort.
good luck with your sale mate

sorry, I miss read, u said mid teens in 1 of your threads. my apologies. I also said that a ANY prado can be had at auction and didnt disclose what auction, but obviously I was speaking of the jap auctions where the Prado came from. they go for under 5g in Japan and ANY1 can buy them. The only reason I was recommending the HZ over the 3l or 2h is that it is 100% proven to be a longer lasting engine with parts more accessable as the 2h is much older. Hey if they snuck in your prado then u might as well sneak in a newer 75 series that will last u longer. I wasnt PUTTING down your ride. It is gorgeous! and looks great. I was just trying to explain that a HZ is a much stronger, tighter, plusher, smoother ride. I have a 2h and I have a HZ. I cant stand the 2h when I am going up hill and people are right on my ass wanting to pass .

The amount of threads I have read from crushers and others on mud just really put my damper on prado.

ps. sorry u took this the wrong way. I just know what difficulties my friends, family are having with there imported Prado.

Good morning Owlridge. NO FOUL NO HARM......I have thick skin ( I live in a house full of females). I am use to having people ride my bumper ( I have a "H" diesel in my HJ45). Unfortunately ( short of an engine swap) I am relagated to the 2H in a 1985/86 HJ75 and I am good with that. I will take reliabilty over speed anyday. I am at the age where I drive fairly slow anyway.
Take care......1978HJ45

25 yrs

you mentioned 1986? wont that be 24yrs? wont that be an issue when importing with customs. I have had a few major crappy incidents when my imported vehicles have been even 1 day short of 25yr. Maybe you are planning on storing it in auz or something of that matter which would work. Just be carefull with customs as they dont budge very easily and have absolute no sympathy as they have rules set in stone

it is actually 21 years but 25 for emissions clearance in the states...
and
there are States that allow importation that other States don't, similar to Quebec and the rest of Canada and RHD vehicles...

Canada is set in stone, 1 day short and it sits. 1 month short and you will either ship it back out of the country OR it can be siezed and crushed or sold at auction.

learn the rules, the loopholes and don't take chances...
plus
NEVER INVEST MONEY YOU CAN NOT AFFORD TO LOSE

best of luck in the sale

I may well have my facts wrong but I thought the 25 year rule was based on "build date" and I would assume that some 1986 HJ75's would have actually been built in late 1985. Here in the States most new vehicles are offered in the prior Fall of the year model. ( ie. some 2011 models are already being offered by Ford, G.M. etc.) Again I may be reading this all wrong and would gladly defer to "Crushers" level of knowledge on the subject
Thanks guys.......1978HJ45

to play it safe shop to the 25 year rule.
also allow at least 3 months for shipping so if you find an early 86 then you will be close to legal. you can purchase and store in Oz till 3 months before eligibility and then arrange shipping.

make sure that you get an independent inspector from Mud to go look at the truck before you purchase. i used this route for the troopie i got from there and the truck looks and drives like 50K instead of the 360K that is on it.

Thanks, I undoubtedly have a steep learning curve when it comes to importing. I will most likely contract with someone who does it for a living. Take care...........1978HJ45

If there are "Mudders" who currently have HJ75's ( trayback or regular pickup bed..sorry not Troopies) in North America, I would appreciate a photo or two as well as specifications ( year model, engine, options ( if any) etc.
Thanks in advance.........1978HJ75 ( I can be reached at "78toyota@gmail.com)

I diagramed it on a napkin and a local machine shop fabricated it. :)

Well I am going to have to come down to the states and take you out for a meal, something extra greasy, so you are inclined to use that napkin for reasons other than disclosing your phone number to me ;)

I'm flattered that you think us Southerners use napkins when we eat greasy food. That would be a good waste of shirt sleeves and pants legs.
If it were not for the fact that this is a fairly old thread and the Cruiser is long gone, I would be glad to photograph the brush bar.

Well us canucks use napkins for almost everything, thought our culture would have been well known by the Southern States, I appreciate the gesture, I think I may eat a couple racks of ribs and design my own bull bar for the lj :D
