Bump for an awesome ride.

bump for a sweet cressida.

how many miles on it now? body and motor? also, can you list maintenance items since you bought from Grip?

highway mpg?

145k on body.

new alternator since purchase, but found out the original was fine.

highway mpg range from 23-27 depending on how you drive.

What reasons do you think CA wouldnt pass it?

I'd have to do some research online, I dont know CA laws much.

  1. Motor must be from same year or later vehicle of the same weight class originally sold in the US. It's probably ok there. (this kills most diesel cruiser swaps)
  2. Must have all original emissions equipment. Maybe ok there. I don't know what ECU you have. It probably matters.
  3. Transmission is considered emissions equipment. If it's the same tranny that came in a Supra Turbo, you could be ok there too. I don't know if the tranny year has to be the same as the engine. This kills lots of swaps. Chevy engines with Toyota trannys would never be compliant.
  4. If all of the above is ok, it goes to the referee, and that guy is usually grumpy and doesn't want you swapping engines. It could very well be ok.

I also think it has to be a CARB certified engine that passed CARB emissions testing, and I don't know if there were any Twin Turbo Supras sold in the USA. I am just going off of what I know off hand, further research would be required of course.

Factory auto tranny I believe. I think the 7m trannies are provide to work fine behind this engine, and take the extra HP.

I'd love to have a 5-speed, but for everyday driving the auto has made me plenty happy. Performance does not lack with the auto and actually allows the engine to stay boosted between shifts.

There were most certainly twin turbo supras sold in the US (automatic trannys too). Unfortunately, not the one that's in this car.

"The (1989 Mark III) Supra was also available in two non-export models in Japan, the JZA70 with a 2.5 L 280 hp (209 kW) twin-turbo 1JZ-GTE..."

The Mark IV (1993+) came with the 2JZ-GTE.

I don't think the referee has any way to tell the engine came from the US or JDM, as long as it could have come from the US, it should be able to pass. It would have to have all the equipment that came on a US vehicle. If you have the title, or at least a copy, of the vehicle the engine came from, it is easier to get it passed.

Still a great sleeper for anyone who lives in a state that's ok with this kind of thing. :)

That is a totally f-ing cool Grandma's pressure-fed Cressida.

If I was in the market for a oddball car I jump on it. However, I f-ing, motha f-ing hate those stupid on-the-door seatbelts with manual lap belts. Thank god they stopped putting those in cars!

You need to post a shot of that thing doing a wicked smoke show in front of a retirement home!

Best laugh I've had all day!
I've learned to live with the seatbelts actually, but do agree to a certain extent.

Pardon my ignorance... But is it front or rear wheel drive?

That bad mo-fo is rear wheel drive!

But here's another question on top of that one...does it have a LSD out back?

When's the retirement home photo shoot?

do it do it do it do it do it!

Rear wheel drive, yes.

1JZ power would be a waste if a FWD car.

No LSD in the rear but the 7m supra ones can be thrown in easy enough i believe.
