just pocked my hj61 up from the port from Japan. Fair amount of blue smoke under load. 254km, where do I start?

Many imports have had their odometers tampered with, so the actual klms may be much higher. An engine importer told me a series of oil changes at 1000klm intervals can clean up the bores. Or you could use something like seafoam.
Or you could call the importer and ask him what he is going to do about it if they promised you something much better, this would be my first option.
Blue smoke is oil burn and usually associated with worn rings/bores, although 12HT do seem to blow a bit of blue smoke.
I would also get it compression tested, this should have been done before.

Diesel smoke will tell you a story:

Diesel Smoke tells YOU a Story…

It's oil burning in the combustion chamber, there are a few ways it can get there but none of them are good. 254K isn't that much but any type of wear is possible, if you send me the VIN, I will look up the history for you.

So after driving her more...some observations.

Blue smoke on start up until warm. After warm no blue smoke, some black smoke under hard acceleration. She did sit at the port for two weeks until I could get her so perhaps that played a factor. I’ll do some 1000km oil changes on her and see if that helps. Based on the condition I would be surprised if she had over 240km

I hope so, but owners who go for long periods without changing the oil and filters can cause premature wear.
Some good long high speed runs may clean it up also and maybe a 20/50 oil if its still warm your way.

Hey mate,

Wondering if you had any success with this or if you identified the issue?

Cheers

Drive it hard for a bit!! Then settle down into how you are happy to treat it….they are tough engines and put up with clearances that would kill others!
My 650000km engine drove beautifully, but used a bit of oil when towing my boat.. (puffs of smoke when taking off after sitting at lights too)
Only upon tear-down did I find out how bad it was - but it kept going!!!
If you have heaps of cash - rebuild it! If you don’t - just drive and enjoy it!!!!
