Hi everyone, over the last couple of days my 100% dependable DD cruiser has started to have a problem starting. She won't turn over with the first turn of the key. It will start to turn over (1 or 2 revs) and then just go dead. Sometimes I get lights only. I can turn the key back to the off position and then she will start right up. It's doesn't seem like a battery problem as when it cranks it turns over quickly with what seems like plenty of juice. It used to happen every once in a while but now it's almost everytime I start her after shes been sitting. After she starts I can turn the key off and she will start right back up like usual. I'm thinking starter solenoid or starter. Possibly a bad connection? I did a quick look and didn't see anything obvious. Does this sound right? Thanks, BC.

I had something similar where it would turn over 1 or 2 cranks and go dead. Still had lights, radio etc. The problem I had was starter contacts in my starter. 12 dollars and new contacts later... the problem was eliminated.

If I were you, I would go through a process of elimination starting with the easiest/cheapest stuff first.

So, lights ALWAYS work? I agree with Rash, start with the started contacts. Very easy to do and parts are available most any where. Dealer, Napa, auto electric rebuild shop. Should be only a few dollars. There are some good write ups on the procedure or look in the FSM.

Just to make sure though, get the battery tested and check cables at both battery and starter.

"Sometimes stuff" is usually connections. It won't cost you a thing to carefully clean all the connections at the battery, including the clamps to the battery posts. Your dependable DD needs to be touched there occasionally!

If the starter cranks briefly at normal speed, then quits, I would measure voltage at the solenoid "In" lug and "out" cable to the starter motor when the failure occurs. This test will confirm a disconnect in the relay, most likey the contacts mentioned in the above posts.

Try cleaning the battery and then checking out the wires more so the one going to the starter.......sounds like a easy fix. Sometimes there is corrosion where you do not see it .
