they are not power monsters from the factory but the 2tr does make an extra 42 ft-lbs of torque and 42 more hp. the 2tr-fe also takes boost really really well. you can easily get another 100hp out of it with a turbo or super charger.
not to mention it has variable valve timing (dual vvti after 2014) which helps at the top end where something like the 22re really suffers. I wish the 3rz had VVTI.
I bet if you added 4.88s to that truck it would be perfect.

I figured I would give a long term update on the 2tr swap. I converted the pickup into a 1st gen 4runner and during the maiden voyage the fan hit the bottom of the radiator and causing it to dump all the coolant. I did not know that so I catastrophically overheated it and killed the engine that was in it. I replaced it with a 2tr-fe from a 2022 taco that only had 22k miles on it. I have now put another 22k miles on that engine and its going strong. I installed the secondary air injection pump, and the evap canister and it now runs perfectly with zero codes.
