It's all about location... I know that's why it's not at my house! :D

1988 Toyota HiLUX Importation

Production date code 25 years back is ok. It goes by the month/day of first registration otherwise. So even if the first day of registration on this truck was today (12/11/13) you are still ok. If any doubt existed, after January 1st, 2014 it is 100% over 25 years. But a quick check of the body tag will tell you production date. If someone had concerns bringing it across, you can just have a shipping broker pick it up from the seller and ship it to you directly. That way you can make sure all paperwork is in order. We do this process for our customers when needed.
Hard to find truck, usually you have to find these in Japan (when you can- they are rare over there these days)- and are priced much higher if you do find one (ocean shipping costs).

Good luck with the sale!

Once again the last week has flooded a bunch of interest in the truck.

It appears almost certain now that the truck is headed to New York State.
Just finalizing all the paperwork, shipping nearly confirmed.

Buyer is going to get a really cool Christmas present!

Thanks for the PMs and interest, I'll start replying to them if the deal falls through.

Sold and Shipped to New York.

Happy Trails

Been looking at these in Australia.

Do you think the location on this one hurt the price?

Trying to work out if it is worth bringing these over.

Thanks for your input.

I don't think location plays too much a part in selling these. The 2 biggest problems for bringing them in the USA is they have to be already 25 years old and being that the condition is a lot less. The second part of selling one in the USA is almost every importer in Canada stopped bringing them over due to heads cracking and they're not willing to risk that much. Good luck to you though if you're going to try it!

Interesting point on the heads cracking. Is this happening in transit or after they arrive? Seems odd that they can be 25 years old and not have a problem and then all of a sudden the head cracks.

We send containers with or without vehicles. If I can find something that people want then all the better.

I could be wrong ( my wife says I often am ) but unlike the 2L-TE, I don't recall the 2.4L having head issues. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.

That's right. Its the 2L-TE that cracks. Some of these came with the 3L na and it is fine. The fix for the 2L-TE is replace the head with the 3L head.

......... and drive it in a very conservative manner. :)

As have I. I came on specifically looking to see if anyone had started doing this yet. With many more falling under the 25 year rule, I have started to look for one of these over another cruiser. They are not that difficult to find in Australia it seems. The ute/ double cab truck is king over there.

Let me know if you find something you like. I am looking to send a container or maybe two (one from Brisbane and one from Perth) to North Carolina in January.

I have been considering this but the paint would only apeal to certain people so it is a bit of a roll of the dice: 1988 Toyota Hilux Ute

How much would it cost to get one over here ready to roll (taxes, shipping, misc. fees, etc.), minus the actual truck cost.

The whole L series engines have the same virtual head flaw, there is a TON of information on this site about it including cross cut pictures of a cylinder head.

It's probably going to be a pretty solid market if you can find a way to get a double cab diesel to North America cheap enough. Up in Canada I've seen 91 to 93 sell in mint shape for around $18,000 but that is also because it's a 3L turbo and very low kilometres.

Originally I was going to get a truck out of Portugal due to them being left hand drive, very light use hauling cork around and also had a importer with family over there to do paperwork and shipping. Alas shipping still killed the deal, just not a big enough market to send something cheap.

Good luck though!!

Daniel, it is all about location, location, location. If you can find the right vehicle within a hour radius of the packing depot then you have very little transport. Same on the other end, if you are near Portland, Oregon or Charlotte, NC then you have very little transport.

So best case scenario you are looking at less than $3,800 in you drive. Then start adding transport.

Mat we can't send the 1991 - 1993 vehicles to the USA for another few years (2016 - 2018).

I'm aware. My 88 was the newest year possible to ship.

I was just posting up recent sale prices for 91-93... they're valuable to sell. The earlier ones aren't nearly as expensive so you'd have to be able to bring them on land USA for quite cheap.
