Hello!!!

Long story short - I bought this bad boy back in September and because of some bad info from my motor vehicle office have come to find that i can't register it here on the Front Range of Colorado.

Price: $25,000

"hey! why are you trying to sell it for more than you paid!"

Answer - after driving it back from portland, i had my local diesel shop check it out and found we needed to rebuild the transfer case, rebuild the steering box and other misc stuff. $4k later it was back on the road. later i had the alternator replaced, $700 i am back at it. i have all of the receipts from my repairs and a folder of documents from Lukas.

This thing is good to go now!!!

Here is a link to the original post from Lukas (great guy by the way, still returns my texts):

It looks exactly the same as in his post. The tent is included.

Please email me if you would like any more info (i'll answer to the best of my knowledge) or more pics.

Please also find out if you can register this in your area before going down the long depressing road i just traveled.

thanks,
Scott

Just in case it wasnt clear, the rig is located in the Denver area.

not registerable in California either

Why not, could you elaborate? Maybe I'm missing something. 25+ yr old & diesel should be fine right?...I only say because I was recently about to bring an HJ61 to LA...I did lots of research/talked to people and found it shouldnt be a problem.

i take it the 87 vin and title is for gas.... conversions in cali must not use a different class of vehicles engine........ie. 4bd1t engine code comes from a commercial class vehicle and 87 cruiser is not a commercial class vehicle. if the previous owner had regd it in a state which had a "diesel" in the title.......then cali would accept it as a diesl.......but they only see a gas vin and gas title........so the diesl then falls into conversion requirements above.

if the conversion was for a vw tdi/ mercedes or other diesel engine from the same class vehicle as a landcruiser....then it would be legit in CA.

bringing in a hj61 is different as its not a conversion- easiest way would be to have it reg/titled with diesel in the title from another state.

Ah I see, thank you for the education on this I appreciate it. Good to know when looking in the future. I see how it would be different than importing/registering a truck already titled deisel elsewhere.

actually you should look into CARB board rules more closely- iirc Carb has some minutia on whether a vehicle was originally federalized.......and technically the hj61 wasnt federalized in the U.S. But there is an argument to be made that the fj60 was federalized and the hj60/61 are just "option" models of a federalized vehicle.......

i have heard dmv asking for CARB verification paperwork......which you probably wouldnt have........and ergo the hoop jumping begins. Much easier to avoid CARB etc.....and just buy one that has already been deemed a U.S. legal diesel via another states title which says its a diesel. Many DMV officials dont know CARB minutia and get hung up on it causing greif.

Makes sense, thanks for info. I was looking at one already titled in the US so probably would have been fine.

If it just needs to say Diesel on the title have you thought of "selling" it to someone that lives in a state that doesn't care and then have them "sell" it back to you 3 months later after the paperwork is done?

even if the title was correct i wouldnt be able to pass the emissions.

Have you considered registering it as a antique vehicle? No emissions. If my future cruiser doesn't pass emissions thats what i plan on doing.

you can't drive it all day everyday, but i figure you can make up an excuse for why your driving it if you get pulled over (went to a car show, took it to a mechanic, etc) And you can drive it basically as much as you want during the spring / summer.

In Colorado it has to be 1976 or older to qualify as a Classic.

Pre mothers day bump. I'm sure this would make a mom's day!!!

Aren't two guys here on MUD running that same conversion here in KA ?I believe they are registered as a diesel w/o any problems......

You could do what my import friends do. Find a friend in the next county over that doesnt have emissions. Print out a lease agreement that says you live there. Maybe send a bill like a phone bill to that address. Now take your lease and un-opened piece of mail and use it as your proof of address and get your registration.
