So, just began my project of fixing the rust in my trusty cruiser and along the way it will also get new paint job (PO's paint job wasnt perfect, laquer was chipping of badly  )... Will try to document the project and since we all love pics i'll try to keep them coming

Few general views to begin with...

That is a really nice cruiser and I would only do mecanical stuff.
On the other hand your Landcruiser $k1llZs dont look promising at all :flipoff2:
Can you inflate a tire? :D
know how to open the fuelcap ? :p
Fill the wiper fluid (front only, I will spare the rear question)
flip the sunscreen down? ;)
close the hood untill it locks?

Get some Rapid Fix. In this instance, it'll fix your broken turbo.

Already fixed it with some epoxy :grinpimp:
Hopefully I wont manage to break them G's and LandCruiser tags :p

Sorry, what rust? I've got a 61 that you can actually see the rust on. closer in pics please. And where did you get those mudflaps/flares?

Did some more work today, stripped off the front end and removed about half of the tapes from the sides... Also pulled of the flares and probed some rust spots...

Next job would be to remove rest of tapes, remove tires and use angle grinder to get rid of those crusty skirts and replace them with 60x100x2 RHS profiles...

No! NO, please remove these pictures, it was looking so nice :D

It allmost look like it was painted before? you know a Landcruiser rust spot mulitplies until only rusted air remains?

If you have a piece of rust it becomes 2, that becomes 4, then 8, then after a night is is 16, later that day: 32
Before the day ends:64, look the other way and voila: 128, Start welding 256, start grinding and 512 rust spots, :ban:

Yep, it was re-painted by PO about 6 years ago becouse it was in a slight accident and drivers side was torn open like a tuna can...

Unfortunately, it seems they totally ignored the rust at the time and now I'm left to deal with it...

I havent yet dared to tap the frame with hammer becouse i'm afraid there will be very little steel left to weld anything on to...

Another batch of pictures :meh:

Sorry to hijack the thread for a second, but does anyone know what the "G" medallions stand for?

For a while I thought they were only on the 3B equipped Cruisers, but now I'm thinking they were on some H models as well.

Thanks!

Was busy doing my thesis work today so only managed to do some grinding... Also found a little surprise from the rear wheel arch...

That was hidden under the bondo

ps. I've no idea what's the official explanation for G-tag but I believe it tells about the equipment level of the car.... G -> some cool stuff like electric windows or central lock GX -> all the cool stuff

Just curious here...why did you need to grind off the skirts and replace it with those steel bars? I ask because i have *some* rust there on mine too, which I just grinded off and patched with fibreglass.

60\61 series came in 4 different versions of badges

V (poor mans)
G
GX
VX (luxury version)
plus there are all sorts of strange mixture's offcourse, just to proof the opposite.....:grinpimp:

neat way to make slider

now that you have got sliders/rockers - why don't u seal the ends with plates and then you have a small tank for a compressor - okay two small tanks (one on each side) - put a compressor in engine compartment and run air lines to these small air tanks

- just an idea - I may try it after the winter as I need to similarly cut out my rockers

cheers Kent

There are actually few reasons for that which I'm gonna list here just for you :p

1) this car will be seeing occasional offroading, therefore the increased rock-resistance of the skirts will be appreciated
2) I don't want to make bondo/fiberglass patches in this car
3) replacing the skirt with steel bar is in my opinion a lot easier than trying to bend and tack proper sheet metal parts to replace them

Now that's an idea worth considering, there is afterall about 11 liters of space inside each sections... I would only have to add fittings for air hoses to them...

I have also seen exhaust routed through the drivers side rocker, that way you get heated rocker for those winter days when it gets iced :D

yes 22 liters IS about 5 gal plus

thats all u would need for tanks

b4 reading this thread - I was originally pondering a making a triangular tank - so that it looks more like original rocker but then |I would only get half the tank size/volume

make sure to give us a picture when u put the doors back on - I would like to see how those square rocker/slider/tanks look when she is all together - mind u who cares its not like either of our hj60 is going win any beauty contests

cheers

Finally had time today to work on the car (even old man was there ;))

Patched up rear wheel arc

Lookin' good.

Good for you catching it relatively early and cleaning out that rust.
