Good day.

I just picked up a 1987 BJ73. The truck came from Texas and that is where the name comes from. This is my first 70 series and I love it. Drives incredible.

The Good
13B-T
5 speed - H55F and Full Float LSD - K085
FQ11 - Power chrome mirrors and suspension seats
I believe it has AC - See pic below. That looks like an AC compressor.

The not so good
Body rust above each fender - I plan to clean up/treat as much as possible and cover with fender flares

I will treat all the rust however this will be a driver to enjoy.

Any insights from the build plate would be much appreciated. I found some info on the web.

Very nice, I have one almost identical. Also a 1987, same color, same motor and same tires even. My frame number is about 75 newer than yours is all. I've had it about 10 years and its been a great vehicle. I've been thinking of selling it for a troopie but just can't bring myself to let it go.

No such thing as a 3B-T head.

You have a 3B 3.4L IDI with an aftermarket turbo.

Keep the temps under control and you should be good. Or, not and blow it up!
Woops. 13B-T motor? Also, does that look like an AC compressor? Thank you.

Ahhhh. Much better. ;)

13B-T: 3.4L DI Turbo diesel.

Yup, you have AC.
Awesome. It drives great and moves better than expected. I wonder if it might be a LASRE motor.

The 13B-T is a turbocharged version of the 13B engine, with a compression ratio of 17.6:1. Output is 120 hp (89 kW) at 3,400 rpm with 159 ft·lbf (217 N·m) of torque at 2,200 rpm. The later "LASRE" version has 130 PS (96 kW) at 3,400 rpm and 30.0 kg⋅m (294 N⋅m; 217 lb⋅ft) at 2,000 rpm.[2]

Great upgrade!

Looks like someone put a Garrett turbo on there which isn’t factory. If you can read or post the build plate of the turbo that would tell more info. It looks smaller which is better for the 13bt for spooling quicker.
Turbo upgrade makes a huge difference on the drivability of the 13bt.

Personally, I would also take that PCV hose out of the intake, or put a catch can so it doesn’t dump oily mist into the turbo.

Thank you. Is the PCV hose the hose running by the oil cap on the front of the engine? I will look for some markings on the turbo.

It is a part of the 1980’s LASRE engine development program.

I’ve owned two 13B-T powered Land Cruisers (BJ71 & BJ74) and having the manual transmission is a big plus in my opinion.

It's really fun to drive. Revs to like 3000. Nice and smooth. Doing donuts and drifting in the snow was a blast in 2wd and 2nd gear.

Body rust above each fender
You should be able to source factory replacements for the fenders. Old ones unbolt and new ones bolt in.

From your pics, the left front fender looks good. The left rear quarter panel looks a little rusty around the top. I'd take the opportunity to go through all of the cleanout plugs in the back to make sure no moisture is collecting in the lower back section of the quarters. Salt and water will be getting in from the rust holes as well as the FRP top, if the top's window seals are cracked and worn out.

P.S. Don't forget to add pictures to your post in the Registry thread.
P.P.S Welcome ... nice '73

PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation (Hose) - it goes from valve cover to air intake (from my experience).

Here it is in your photo:

And here is the parts page:

Thank you. I need both front fenders. Are they available from Toyota?

I found this for the left side.

If you don't have them already, check out:

Enter your frame number and find your parts, whichever one you enjoy the most. I like Amayama while checking against toyodiy. Save your vehicle and make a bookmark to make it easy 👍

53802-90K04 = LH

Great looking Cruiser! Do you recall the sellers name? It looks very familiar. The 73/74 is the ultimate wheelbase imo.

Let us know if we can help with any parts @ Cruiser Outfitters (Cruiserteq.com), we stock a wide variety of parts for the 7x Series, axle parts, complete transmissions & t-cases, weatherstripping, steering, etc, etc

Both fenders are available from Toyota USA. You will need HS-7 documentation for parts release by the analysts in Plano. Your dealer will need to facilitate this.

Also, I would highly recommend searching back over 20 years of 7x series knowledge here on MUD in this section and in the "Diesel/24V" section. Every question you are asking has most likely been answered already.

Hello,

x2.

The Search function is a valuable resource that goes way too underappreciated. It does not bite; all it takes is a few key words.
